This is a follow-up to https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/ram-upgrade-for-HP-280-G1-MT/td... but I didn't see any way to reply there.

I would like to upgrade the RAM in a 280 G1 microtower, and registered/buffered DDR3 ("server memory") is about half the price of "regular" unbuffered/unregistered DIMMs.

Does anyone know if this system is compatible with the cheaper registered memory?

Here's some additional info about the system from the BIOS:

Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
Product Name: HP 280 G1 MT
SKU Number: P0C88UT#ABA
Born on Date: 10/21/2016
System Board ID: 2B34
System Board CT Number:
BIOS Revision: D0R v80.14
BIOS Date: 09/28/2015
Processor Type: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4590S CPU
Processor Speed: 3000 MHz
Memory Size: 6144 MB DDR3 / 1600 MHz / Dual Channel

No, the HP 280 G1 MT is not compatible with registered (Server) RAM -it uses unbuffered, Non-ECC DDR3 UDIMMs for its memory upgrades. You need to use Non-ECC, unbuffered DDR3 RAM sticks, not the ECC, registered type found in servers.

you’ll need to use standard unbuffered DDR3 desktop RAM
the cheaper registered server modules won’t work in your system.

I recently explored HP’s website and was really impressed by the clean design, smooth navigation, and the way product details are explained in depth. The user-friendly interface makes it easy to compare features and find exactly what you need. I especially like how HP keeps innovating — it reminded me of the way Smart Watches have transformed daily routines with their modern features and seamless integration into our lives. Similarly, HP is building solutions that blend technology with convenience, making both work and lifestyle more efficient.
