Yes, Prométhée , you summed it up - these are all the possible onBoard drive connections as it stands:

  • SATA0 Hard drive connector
  • mSATA Mini-SATA
  • SATA3 Optical drive

Great detailed Pic of the Motherboard, thanks!

Problem with the mSata:

there is so little space underneath once the Steel drive tray is inside the USDT that no drive (directly attached to the mSata) would fit underneath it.

I see some potential adapters on ebay, but it  is hard to tell if they would fit without physically trying.

What adapter(s) does/did HP have in mind to be attached to this mSata?

Ideas anyone?

@EpicRelic,

An mSATA SSD will/should fit.  I ordered a 1TB mSATA SSD for less than $60 via AliExpress the other day to install it in a very similarly crowded HP Compaq Elite 8300 USDT as an extension of one of my earlier HP legacy desktop upgrade projects: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Upgrading-HP-Compaq-Elite-8300-....

And I am 95% certain I can even fit a 2mm thick copper heatsink I ordered on top of it:

Rest assured, as soon as the mSATA SSD shows up on my doorstep, I will report back on my experiences with the HP Elite 8300 USDT.

Kind Regards,

@NonSequitur777 thanks for your thoughts, yes your 8300 looks sort of similar when I google it.

Will be interesting if your SSD fits (even with Heatsink?)  Ali deliveries take a while

Alternative for flexibility is still an adaptor - I came across this one, on eBay (but still China, hence wont order takes ages)

Still haven't decided on an adapter (one error purchase I already have to return as not enough space/hight)

Still, would be great to hear experiences from people here who have used this slot, or/and know what Part/Drive/Adaptor HP recommends on this slot... (hence I'd like to leave this thread open for now)

@EpicRelic,

I am patiently awaiting my AliExpress mSATA order to make it to my home.  According to the tracking information, it just made landfall in California.  As soon as I get it, I will work on my HP Elite 8300 USDT and share my findings.

Kind Regards,

@EpicRelic,

As promised, a follow-up: The 1TB mSATA drive came in and successfully installed in my HP Elite 8300 USDT!

Btw, the 1TB mSATA drive is faster than the 1TB Samsung 870 QVO SSD I have installed in this USDT.

There was even sufficient space to add the copper 2mm heatsink with thermal pad on the mSATA drive, and the metal drives cage fitted just fine over it:

Hope this was helpful.

Great upgrade, I assume that was what HP had in mind when offering that bottom slot. And not via adapters etc.

Will try to get one of these you ordered - Thank you

@EpicRelic,

You are very welcome -glad I could be of assistance.

If you don't mind, please follow up once you installed your mSATA SSD.
