My new windows 11 computer did not have a dvd drive. I had a BUNUD external drive so added it OK. Have been unable to burn or write to it every time. It fails very often. I tried a different USB port but no difference. Have used TPMGenc and Ashampoo to try to burn a DVD also tried file explorer to both burn and just copy. It fails most times. All windows Microsoft tests say no problems. I Did have intermittent similar problems on my previous HP computer under windows 10 but not as bad.

Windows Media Player on Windows 11/10 offers SOME DVD burning features.
It can burn audio CDs, data CDs as well as data DVDs
windows 11 does not come with the necessary software to fully support r/w to CD/DVD's you need 3rd party software for this and that can be free or paid use google to search
you can also have a software related issue, sometimes reinstalling the related driver and/or device will resolve the issue

I have TMPGenc and AShampoo Burning programs. Both fail to complete the burn. Also a simple copy from file to DVD starts fine and then hangs .
Have deleted the Lowerlimit from regestry as suggested on various posts, there was no Uppperlimit?
Have now tried uninstalling ATPI controller and a reboot. I created a restore point before doing anything. Nothing seems to work. Both windows 11 and HP check programs say the driver is the correct one.
I have changed USB slots several times. The disk drive a BUNUD external USB drive, worked OK under windows 10, This is a brand new Computer a HP Envy..
DVD's used were various some single and some dual layer. Single do occasionally work but not often.
Any suggestions???

cd/dvd's sold from many resellers are actually New Old Stock and can be defective from age if the stock is from some batch that was made 3 or more years ago and sitting around before use
i would buy cd and dvd disks in a small quanity (5 up to 50) from a seller like amazon
https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Blank-DVD-R-Discs/zgbs/pc/1036658
a clean reinstall of windows 11 can also be tried
also, burning a dvd can be done on a usb 2.0 or faster usb port as the 2.0 usb speed is faster than the fastest dvd burning speed

Was unsure if I did all steps in correct sequence as I went back to restore point each time. Decided to redo all.
Deleted lower limit from registry.
Uninstall Atpi controllet
Rebooted and checked registry and device manager
Scan and repaired a dvd. They are old but still show as good.
Ran a copy and it worked OK.
Decided to reload TMPGenc works 7 clean
Created and copied a dvd OK
Tried several more over 2 dvd disks without error.
Only left to create a dual layer disk but will wait until I need one. Do not want to waste another.
Thanks for all help. Will open another post it I have more problems.

Failed again writing a DL DVD. OK on single size disks.
I tried again to update the DVD driver in Device manager windows said I had the correct driver!
Found a compatible driver. Windows driver from Microsoft was dated 2006. New Driver is by Corel and dated 2019. Tried a test burn to a DL disk which worked OK.
????????????????????????
Will let you know if works consistently.

there are no drivers per say for DVD/CD drives, as the OS has basic support for them and the same goes for the USB port
what a DVD/CD burning program does is Extend the basic capability of the optical drive to include more features
as previously stated you appear to have optical disks that have/are going bad there are several programs that can read the date code of the disk and tell you when the disk was made and who the disk maker was but i don't know if the utils will run under win 10/111
