I have an HP omen obelisk with a i7-8700 and a rtx2080. I recently wanted to downgrade the gpu to a 1080. The PC boots up normally, but once the obelisk logo shows, the gpu stops spinning and when I open task manager or any benchmark application(3D Mark) nothing shows up for the gpu. Its only the intergrated graphics from the 8700.

@Valiantt, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for all the detail — sounds like a classic GPU detection issue after a hardware swap. Here’s a breakdown of what could be going wrong and how to fix it:

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting:

Reseat the GPU

  • Power off the PC completely.
  • Unplug the power cable.
  • Remove the RTX 1080, clean the PCIe slot gently with compressed air.
  • Reseat the GPU firmly into the PCIe x16 slot.
  • Double-check that any power cables (6-pin / 8-pin) are properly connected to the GPU.

Check BIOS Settings

  • Boot into BIOS (usually by tapping F10 at startup for HP systems).
  • Look for:
    • Primary Display Adapter or Graphics Configuration.
  • Make sure it's set to PCIe or Discrete GPU, not iGPU / Integrated.
  • Save changes and restart.

Clear CMOS

This resets BIOS settings, in case something's stuck.

  • Either:
    • Unplug the PC and remove the CMOS battery for ~5 minutes, then reinsert.
    • Or use the CMOS reset jumper (check motherboard manual).

Boot into Safe Mode & Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller)

  • Boot Windows in Safe Mode.
  • Use DDU to clean uninstall NVIDIA drivers.
  • Power down, reinstall the GTX 1080, and then power up.
  • Reinstall the latest NVIDIA drivers for the 1080 from NVIDIA’s site.

Check Device Manager

If the GPU is still not detected:

  • Open Device Manager > Display Adapters.
  • See if it shows "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" or

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
