hp p6535a
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My specs  are:

i3 550

8gb (4 x 2gb) ddr3 1333mhz

1TB HDD 7200 rpm

MS 7613 MSI (HP OEM) MOBO

GTX 660TI

500 WATT COSAIR PSU

So I decided to upgrade my system's graphics card from an ati hd 5450 to a gtx 660ti. The computer works perfectly fine with the hd 5450 or onboard intel HD but it doesn't detect the gtx 660 ti at all in device manager. I have updated bios to 6.18 (2012). I read from some other forums that there should be no issue because the only limitation of this bios (6.18) is that it cannot utilise nvidia graphics 700s - and above due to the lack of uefi. The nvidia driver installer says no compataible hardware can be found. The HP technical team couldn't help me. If anyone can please help I be eternally grateful! If the graphics card is too new could anyone recommend other graphics card that will work and are faster than the ati hd 5450.

Hi,

Check each of the PCI-e auxiliary power connectors with a volt-ohm-meter to ensure that the GTX 660 is getting power from all of the correct pins.

Another possibility is that the PCIe x16 slot is damaged.  Check the slot pins with a magnifying glass and a flashlight.

It might very well be that the GTX 660TI is DOA (very rare to buy a new GTX 660TI) or the GPU firmware was modified for UEFI only.

If you still can't get the GTX 660 working then it's time to move on and close down this thread.

Hi

The 660ti requires two six pin supplemental power supply connections to power the card. The Corsair PS should have these connectors.

Your PC was introduced by HP in 2010.

It appears the PCIe x16 slot on your motherboard which is reserved for a graphics card may be a PCIe 1.0 version.

The 660ti is a PCIe 3.0 card.

PCIe 3.0 graphics cards are backwards compatible with PCIe 2.0.

The 660ti may not work when installed in a PCIe 1.0 x16 slot.

PCIe 2.0 graphics cards will work in PCIe x16 1.0 graphics card slots.

@Grzwacz,

The PCIEx16 is version 2.

@Anthony22,

Did you remember to delete the previous Radeon HD5450 driver and software?

Hi

Thanks for the heads up on that wb2001.

Should have checked the chipset.

Very strange the MB is not talking to the 660.

Maybe the x16 slot is disabled in the BIOS???

I worked on an h8 series HP desktop and could not install a alternative, compatible graphics card. Never solved the issue.

HP was providing unified AMD graphics driver for the stock OEM HP card. You could not update the AMD drivers using AMD update. AMD driver install would fail with unrecognized device error.

That's a bit confusing. Doing a bit of light reading, HP may have made the BIOS so that the GPU cannot be recognized. But first, Anthony, can you reset the CMOS on your computer to make sure no residual settings are left behind from the old GPU? Unplug the battery from the motherboard (now would also be a good time to replace it, that PC is getting older), set the CMOS jumper to pins 2-3 (CLEAR) and wait about 10 minutes. Do the reverse of the past steps and boot it up, and see if it works.

I don't run HP, I just like helping others!

Hi,

If the above suggestions don't work then boot into the BIOS and make sure that the Primary Video adapter is set to PCI-e x16.  You'll find this setting under the Advanced topics. Generally the BIOS should auto select but the version 6 BIOS might have limitations.

The PCI-e x16 slot should be version 2 (H57 chipset) but you can use SIV to verify the specification.

If you bought the 660TI used then check with the seller to see if the GPU firmware was modified.

yep I have done. Still get the same issue. Should I try upgrading to windows 10. If no other options work I might as well get another mobo. I also have an i7 870. Do you think putting it in the system instead of the i3 would do any good?

Hi Anthony22

I don't think going to Windows 10 will help.

Swapping in a different processor (even if the processor has been tested by HP and verified to work with the factory motherboard) will not fix this either.

Swapping in a different motherboard is like swatting a fly with a 20 pound sledgehammer. Doing this is going to create a new set of problems.
