I am trying to assist my nephew with upgrading his system, specifically the graphics card.

Looking at the NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2060 Super as an option, or something comparable in that price range.

I used to build systems but have only upgraded RAM on off the shelf boxes. Would the above card be compatible? Any things to consider when upgrading the graphics card on this board?

@BenjaminM , welcome to the forum.

Good for you!  It is great that you are helping your nephew upgrade his computer.

Here is a HP Knowledge Base article that will help you determine which cards will work:

As you will see, there are several things to consider when upgrading a HP computer.  HP has their motherboards made to their specifications.  Therefore, they are not necessarily the same as a retail board.  The first problem that you will have is the power supply unit (PSU) in the computer.  It is only 400W and can't be upgraded because it only has a 4-pin power connector.

Here are the specifications for the GTX 2010 Super:

Thank you so much for your reply! You confirmed my suspicion regarding the PSU and upgrade compatibility, I have been trying to explain this to my nephew.

So, here's the situation. My nephew, like every teen his age, is heavily into Fortnite. He is concerned about the dropped frames that he sees reported in the game.

Unfortunately, I wasn't available to build him a system prior to my sister purchasing this one. I suggest upgrading his ram to at least 16 GB but also acknowledge that the GPU could be better. I also urged him to just ignore the dropped frames and enjoy the game, as I have with what was a high end PC that I built years ago.

So, that's where we are. I can build a system for him but their budget is limited, so an upgrade to the graphics card is preferable. Do you know of any options with that pin configuration? Can the PSU not be upgraded?

Thanks again!

@BenjaminM,

If your still here, read my spreadsheet.

The HP 690-0020 has the AMD 580, 185W card. The 2060 is a 160W card (using less watts) .

The PSU in that unit is 400W, and has the required 6+2 PCIE power plug

As long at the 2060 card length will fit, you really have no problem.

Forgive me, it has been a long day.

Are you saying that the card that I linked should be compatible?

We're all open to suggestions for upgrading the graphics card on this system to hopefully give him a better gaming experience. I'll be upgrading the RAM to at least 16. Any graphics cards in the $300-400 range that are compatible, suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

@BenjaminM,

Did you actually study the spreadsheet?    The 2060 is 15W less than the existing 580.  But you must know the length of the card. Would that fit on the space available?

I'm posting on my phone, hard to read the spreadsheet. I live two hours away from my nephew, I have not been able to see the system. I am just trying to find suggestions on a graphics card that is compatible.

Thanks!

That's no problem. Do you have any recommendations for a compatible card for this system, as outlined above?

@BenjaminM,

I thought we were on the same page, if the RTX2060 Super fits. You have to get the specs on the manufacturer and model, then make a template to see fit it fits.
