Good morning or afternoon for everyone.
We are trying to enhance our HP 280 G2- SFF with a better CPU, the i3 6100 is fine, but sometimes for 4k videos is not enough.
As far as we could read from the technical specifications from HP, it supposed to have support for both 6gen and 7gen intel CPUs.
Public HP technical guide.

People on eBay are listing those HP desktop with 7th gen cpus.
Also on Kingston's memories support page, it is listed at capable of handling 7th gen CPUs.
Is this informatation correct? are we able to switch to the more recent 7h gen i5 7500 , as an example?.
Kind regards.

Good morning / afternoon, as we where suspecting, the 7th gen cpus is only supported on the later edition, from early 2017.
Those later editions of motherboard and HP 280 G2 SFF do have a different motherboard internal number 8425, and they are able to handle i7 7700, i5 7500 and i3 7100 intel cpus.
To anyone else, who is looking to see if their board is the later edition, compatible with 7th gen, the part number is : L01951-601. Win KBL (kabylake). , and the Model of motherboard will show as 8425, not early release 82C9

Hi:
I found this document from HP which indicates you can install three 7th gen core processors...
Intel® Core™ i3-7100
Intel® Core™ i5-7500
Intel® Core™ i7-7700
See pages 4 & 5.

Good morning / afternoon Paul, thanks for your considerations.
This very same document was the one that we where pointing out, and we found already.
We tried with a i7 7700, and the system is not booting, even with one or two sticks of 2133,2400 or 2666Mhz ddr4 memory.
We have ordered a cheaper i3 7100, and will be returning the i7 7700, seems fine, but maybe is faulty.
Actually is working with i3 6100 cpu, and i7 6700 cpu, which also points as the TDP or PSU seems not the problem.
Many thanks You all.

You're very welcome.
I'm surprised the i7-7700 didn't work. It may be a defective processor.
Usually, HP is very accurate with the business-class desktop specifications.
There is only one BIOS update listed for your PC and the release notes do not mention anything about adding support for additional processors.

If you look at the Intel specs for your PC's chipset, under the compatible products section, it definitely lists several Intel 7th gen core processors as supported.

@Paul_Tikkanen is correct: 7th-gen Intel processors and in particular the i7-7700 is compatible with the HP 280 G2 SFF: HP 280 G2 SFF Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Good morning / afternoon for everyone.
We have found two different motherboards on the HP 280 G2 SFF,
There are two types of Motherboard:
HP 8425 and the other one 82C9, those different configurations can be seen on userbenchmark and geekbench results.
Maybe I'm wrong, but the 8425, if hexadecimal seems newer, and also it handles the 7th generation option, on the other hand the older 82C9 board is only showing results for 6th generation CPUs.
Anyone know a similar case on different boards and specifications?. Many thanks.

You are correct: whereas the HP 280 G2 SFF's fitted with the HP 8425 motherboards are compatible with 7th gen Intel processors, the HP 280 G2 SFF's models with the HP 82C9 motherboards are only compatible with 6th gen Intel processors.
However, the 82C9's are compatible with the i5-6600K (HP 280 G2 SFF Performance Results - UserBenchmark), which has a 91-watt TDP, and by extension, the i7-6700K. The i7-6700K may not be the top-of-the-line CPU it once upon a time used to be, but it remains absolutely a respectable gaming processor if paired with a decent graphics card, at least 2 x 8GB DDR4 2133 MHz RAM, and a quality SSD.
