I am attempting to replace a 1 TB SATA mechanical hard drive with a 1 TB Crucial SSD in an HP 510 P010 but with no luck. The PC is stock, 6100T CPU, 8 GB memory, Windows 10 Home.
The only way I can get this machine to boot up, or even go into BIOS, is to have the original mechanical drive in the computer. As soon I connect the SSD drive to the 510 the computer hangs with the "Press ESC key..." to get into the BIOS or to select the boot menu.
I have disabled secure boot. I've tried legacy boot process, UEFI boot process, etc. I have reset the BIOS to default values. I have also built Windows 10 USB boot media and used that in my own PC to install to the SSD (thinking the SSD might be bad). That newly minted SSD drive boots and Windows 10 runs fine in my computer. Move that freshly minted SSD to the 510 and try to boot - no such luck. It just hangs with no access to BIOS or boot menu.
I have cloned the mechanical drive to the SSD. The SSD boots fine in my computer. Move that cloned SSD to the 510 and boot to Windows? No such luck.
I can boot from the USB stick using the 510 with the mechanical drive. Not so with the SSD. It just hangs after displaying the HP logo.
I am out of ideas. What am I missing? Why can't I put a blank SSD into the 510, boot off the USB stick, and install a fresh copy of WIndows 10?
Advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.
John

I have seen this happen before in the Forum. Some HP PCs will not detect certain SATA SSD drives. Have never seen a fix for this problem.
I don't see an M.2 NVME storage device socket on the MB so this option is not available.
I can only suggest, if you are willing to spend more money, trying a HP 2.5 inch SATA SSD.
I would be very surprised if a HP component does not work with a HP PC.

Well, add me to the chorus. I was able to install Windows 10 on an older SanDisk SSD. I also tried a Samsung 840EVO that I had lying around. SamSung SSD did not work either; same problems as before.
Thanks for your help.
