Hi, Kevn:

You need this XP driver for the PCI Serial Port:

Driver - HP Compaq dc7900 Small Form Factor PC | HP® Customer Support

You didn't mention what form factor PC you have but the SFF and CMT use the same drivers anyway.

When you install W7, you use the W7 version of the driver because it is different, and you will need just like you did for XP.

Hi, Kevin:

There are many devices Windows labels as 'PCI-something' that need drivers.

In order to provide you with the right drivers you need, please provide the exact names of the devices that need drivers as shown in the device manager.

A screen shot of the device manager would be fine.

Sorry rushed it at work and forgot that bit.

It says PCI Serial Port, managed to get everthing else going but think i may have missed a driver i need.

Cant get photo up of screen for some reason, its just below Network Adapters in the list and called Other Devices.

Is it to do with the Serial Port on the motherboard, as i need that to work.

You're very welcome, Kevin.

I take it that you have the BIOS currently set to IDE?

Because if not, you would have had to use the F6 floppy install method if the BIOS was set to AHCI or RAID.

So, here's what you do...it's been a while...

Make the storage controller floppy disk for XP.

I have zipped up and attached the XP 32-bit drivers you need below.

Unzip the file and copy all the files inside the folder to the floppy disk.

I use a USB FDD so whatever type drive you have, have it ready to work in your dc7900.

After that is done, and you are ready to install XP on the SSD, go into the BIOS and change the drive controller setting from IDE to AHCI and save the setting.

Boot from the XP installation media.

To install the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) driver during operating system setup, follow these steps:

  1. Press F6 when prompted by the message:

Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver.

The message displays during text-mode phase at the beginning of Windows XP* setup.

NoteNothing happens right after pressing F6. Setup is still loading drivers. Watch for the prompt to load support for mass storage devices.

  2. Press S to Specify Additional Device.
  3. Insert the F6 driver disk when prompted by the message:

Please insert the disk labeled Manufacturer-supplied hardware support disk into Drive A:

    The disk includes the following files: IAAHCI.INF, IAAHCI.CAT, IASTOR.INF, IASTOR.CAT, IASTOR.SYS, and TXTSETUP.OEM.

    Press Enter.
  4. Use the up and down arrow keys to select your PC's drive controller from the list of available controllers.
  5. For the dc7900, you need to scroll to and select the Intel(R) ICH10D/DO SATA AHCI Controller from the list.
  6. Press Enter to confirm your controller and continue.
    The drivers are now installed.
  7. Leave the Floppy disk in the drive until Windows has completely installed. Windows will poll that disk once or twice more during the installation.  I made the mistake of disconnecting the USB flash drive after the driver was installed and the installation failed because it needed a file from the floppy disk, and I couldn't just plug the disk back in the USB port.
