Had problems with this dvd drive from day one, and had to install some programs from thumb drive. Always get error msg when trying to copy disks. Disks work fine in other pc. Have downloaded latest HP Diagnostics but there is no option to test dvd,cd optical drives. Have tried updating driver and device manager shows driver etc as working ok.

Hi
I use AnyBurn for my DVD drive.
Perhaps if you put a DVD in and tried to access it with AnyBurn?
Then run a diagnostic again?
NOW begin checking/testing/proving the Hardware is fit for purpose.
Power on your PC, press ESC (repeatedly), then F2 at the prompt.
Choose System Tests (Fast Test does a 4 minute hardware check).
AND/OR
HOW DO I USE DIAGNOSTICS?
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows is a Windows-based utility that allows you to run diagnostic tests to determine if the computer hardware is functioning properly. The tool runs within the Windows operating system in order to diagnose hardware failures. HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows comes pre-installed on new HP computers, but if not on yours, download here:-

Hi
True, but I don't even know if you have a DVD plugged in internally.
OR if it is listed in Device Manager.
as a hidden device, or a problem device.
What about as a bootable item in the BIOS?
Personally I would make a USB of either Lubuntu or Linux Mint
and boot from one of those and test the DVD drive from there.
It takes Microsoft out of the equation.
Leaving the HP hardware, if it still fails then it's dud DVD drive, else it is a windows problem.

It shows as being installed and working in device mgr. Tried updating driver but seems there are no newer updates. Have deleted and let Windows reinstall it. Why does cd/dvd/optical drive not show as an option on the latest HP Diagnostics?
