HP ENVY All-in-One - 27-p014
Microsoft Windows 11

Looking for a new motherboard for my 27-P014 AIO.  The LGA 1151 socket may take a gen 8 or 9 CPU but there are chipset compatibility issues, and I would just as soon get a new model that fits the chassis of the 27-P014 and hooks up to the existing speakers, screen, I/O matches the backplate, etc.  Can you please recommend a compatible upgrade?

@itheadquarters, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The HP ENVY 27-p014 All-in-One uses a custom H170-chipset motherboard with an LGA1151 socket, which officially supports 6th/7th Gen Intel CPUs like the i7-6700T.
However, upgrading to 8th/9th Gen CPUs (e.g., Core i5-8400) is complicated by several factors:

Motherboard Compatibility Challenges

Chipset Limitations:

  • The existing H170 chipset does not support 8th/9th Gen CPUs due to incompatible power delivery and firmware constraints.
  • 8th/9th Gen CPUs require H310/B360/H370 chipsets, which HP never released for this AIO model.

Physical and I/O Constraints:

  • The AIO’s chassis and backplate are designed specifically for the original motherboard (HP part 797425-001).
Third-party motherboards with newer chipsets are unlikely to fit physically or align with the display, speakers, or I/O ports.

Recommended Solutions

Option 1: Max Out 7th Gen Support

Install the highest compatible 7th Gen CPU (e.g., i7-7700T) on the existing H170 motherboard. This avoids chipset conflicts and maintains full compatibility.

Option 2: Motherboard Replacement Risks

Compatible Models: Only the exact HP motherboard part 797425-001 (H170 chipset) is confirmed to fit3. No HP-certified boards with newer chipsets exist for this AIO.

Third-Party Boards: While eBay listings may advertise LGA1151 motherboards (e.g., H310), there is no guarantee they will fit the chassis or work with the display/power supply.

Option 3: System Upgrade

Given the age of the 27-p014 (released in 2016), consider replacing the entire AIO with a newer model that natively supports 8th/9th Gen CPUs and Windows 11.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
