Hi and Sorry for the Bad English.
About a year ago I tried to install the OS in my G1 600 Mini on the M.2 slot.
I bougt Samsung PM951, but after a couple days of unsuccessful attempts
to boot from this drive I finally gave up and sold it.
After that jusr bought an normal SATA SSD and still use it until now.
Now again I'm thinking to get an M.2 SSD and I would like to ask - Is there any development or new information on this issue?
From the other threads i think that the only working M.2 SSD's by now are:
Samsung SSD 950 PRO NVMe M.2 Series
PLEXTOR PX-M6e М.2 2280 PCIe SSD (If I'm not mistaken)
Is there any new M.2 SSD's confirmed to boot the OS successfully ?
Anything about the new Samsung 960 Pro NVMe ? It looks like this is the model that is being sold right now.
I'm interested and in DREVO D1 M.2 2280 240GB like cheaper option.
Something like a list of the confirmed/supported/tested/working/booting M.2 SSD Drives on HP G1 600/800 will be great.
Thanks

Hi,
I very much doubt that you will see progress on a PC model that is 3.5 years old.
HP Envy 17", i7-8550u,16GB, 512GB NVMe, 4K screen, Windows 11 x64
Custom PC - Z690, i9-12900K, 32GB DDR5 5600, dual 512 GB NVMe, gen4 2 TB m.2 SSD, 4K screen, OC'd to 5 Ghz, NVIDIA 3080 10GB

Just to share my frustration again...
I bought a brand new Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 SSD 250GB drive,
but its not detected in the BIOS (v02.27) no matter what i have tried last two days.
The Win 10 instalation begins on the M.2 without any problem,
but after restart hangs out because the BIOS never detected it.
Samy story like my prevoius Samsung PM951 drive....

You have a contradiction in posted information. If the BIOS never detects the m.2 SSD then Windows 10 would not see the m.2 SSD. Perhaps you are not posting all of the information about your issue. Do you wish to clarify your issue and information?
Looking through the HP information for the HP ProDesk 600 G1 I didn't see any option for ordering a m.2 SSD more or less a NVMe model. That in it's self is a big message.
You might try the following:
- Make sure that your PC boots in UEFI mode. Open up a command prompt and enter: MSINFO32 ---> check the bios mode
- Unplug the existing HDs.
- Install W10 doing a custom installation so that you can delete out any existing partitions and then W10 will format and partition the SSD correctly.
- When you try to boot up, go to the BIOS start up menu and now see if the m.2 SATA device is recognized as an eligible boot device.
If the above fails then you might try the same procedure using a m.2 SATA SSD. Ask the manufacturer if the SSD will boot in UEFI mode.
Check the posted BIOS updates for your PC. You might be behind. Be sure to use the BIOS defaults except for UEFI mode while testing. If you have a non-UEFI graphics card installed then you might want to remove it while testing.
There are a lot of variables with H/W compatiblity and BIOS functionality when attempting to get a m.2 storage device to boot.

Hello Mugensx,
Before this older message thread gets locked, I would like to share some expanded information about using M.2 drives in the HP ProDesk 600 G1 Mini. I do LOVE my HP Mini but found that it has more significant M.2 slot limitations than in most slightly newer models.
I speak from experience since I started researching this issue a year and a half ago for my own HP Mini. While I had success on OTHER systems, I revisited this HP issue off and on several times since then. Here is what I believe to be the most complete and accurate summary:
Specifically regarding M.2 form factor SSD drives in the HP ProDesk 600 G1 Mini with the latest BIOS installed:
1. Can NOT use M.2 form factor SSD drives that are SATA protocol. These are often the cheaper variety of M.2 SSD.
2. CAN use M.2 form factor SSD drives that are PCIe protocol as very fast SECONDARY STORAGE DRIVE (although USUALLY NOT OS bootable). These are also known as NVMe drives. They will operate with Windows 7, 8, or 10 for storage (and Windows 7 requires special MS driver hotfixes or SSD manufacturer driver to even see the drive). You then use ordinary disk management tools to partition and format them.
3. In this PC model, Windows 10 installation media will see your PCIe (or NVMe) M.2 SSD, and even allow to begin installing your OS onto it, but then fails at next BIOS reboot. Unfortunately the LEGACY BIOS or UEFI modes can NOT identify or configure this drive as bootable. There is a RARE exception that M.2 SSD drives with a built-in STORAGE OPTION ROM (loaded at BOOT time) can be bootable. The older Samsung 950 Pro M.2 NVM Express 256GB (model MZ-VKV256) is one drive reported for success in this current thread, and also mentioned here:
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktops-Archive-Read-Only/HP-ProDesk-600-G1-mini-doesn-t-detect-SSD-o...
With THAT type of drive, it is suggested to configure the BIOS as follows:
Under SECURITY>SECURE BOOT CONFIGURATION
Set Legacy Support "Disabled"
or
Under ADVANCED>OPTION ROM LAUNCH POLICY
Set Storage Option ROMs to "UEFI Only"
4. For most NVMe M.2 SSDs (not having OPTION ROM) there is one last possible workaround for this PC. It might not appeal to some people due to extra setup work. It may be possible to install a USB BOOT DRIVE with a special BOOTLOADER that can hand off the boot process to your M.2 drive Windows OS. The USB drive must remain in place and may slow down your boot time, but should give you the fast OS drive AFTER completing USB boot up. See here for an example:
It would be so much better for us HP owners if the ProDesk 600 G1 Mini BIOS were updated to fix this limitation, but obviously that is not going to happen on this slightly older system.

I had the same issue, and tried several Sasmung SSD's, but none of them worked. Then I bought the Plextor PX-AG256M6E, whicht is a PCI-e 4x card with an M.2 SSD on it. Installed it in the 800 mini and I can confirm that this drive is bootable and works fine with Windows 10. During boot it shows a Plextor bootloader, so I guess that makes it different from the rest of the drives I tried.
