HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop 790-00xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, All!

Looking to upgrade my out of the box 1050 ti gfx card in my HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop 790-00xx model that has an HP 844C.00 motherboard to a GTX 2070 Super, or something similar. With my research I have noticed that I may need a PSU upgrade, which might be a little tricky in this rig. Does anyone know of any PSUs that would be compatible with my HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop 790 and provide me with the necessary upgrade for the new gfx card as well? Any and all information on this would be greatly appreciated!

@egw2489,

First you need to verify the card length would fit into the chassis.

Your max is a 500W proprietary PSU. Look at my spreadsheet.  (HP TG01 series example).

Thank you for the nice detailed spreadsheet. Let me see if I am understanding correctly...

Seems that you are stating the max power supply I can have is 500w without completely overhauling the whole system (i.e. motherboard). Is that correct?

@egw2489,

Not sure of your wording/terms..."without completely overhauling".

The motherboards in the list all use a proprietary PSU.  The maximum PSU is the 500W.

I would never suggest or imply change out an HP motherboard using that case.

Sorry for the confusing wording, but essentially I am wondering if I would need a lot more new parts, or simply a new case to upgrade to a PSU that is greater than 500w and not HP proprietary. Preferably looking for something around 650w. I have confirmed that the MOBO is ATX Form Factor. Thus, could I simply move from one case to another ATX case that would allow for a 650w PSU space wise, or does the MOBO need to be replaced too?

@egw2489,

The HP 790 series will only accept what I have told you.  It will not accept an ATX 650W.

So transferring motherboard and components into a new case would not allow for an additional PSU upgrade?
