Hp Pavilion p6210y
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I'm wondering if I can upgrade my cpu to this,

AMD HDX920XCGIBOX Phenom II X4 920 2.8GHz Cache 8MB AM2+ 125W Processor - Retail

https://www.cnet.com/products/amd-phenom-ii-x4-920-2-8-ghz-processor/specs/

Based on what I've read it seems I could. I saw the same model cpu used in pavilion p6210y sold on ebay. So I'm not sure.

Processor upgrade information on hp support site says,

TDP:
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
  • AMD Athlon X2 (Bt)
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 up to 6000+ (W)
  • AMD Phenom Triple-Core up to 8xxx (AM2+) (Toliman)
  • AMD Phenom Quad-Core 9xxx series (AM2+) up to 9850 (Agena)

If interested here is the guy on ebay link to where he sold what looks like the same model.

@Weevie45, welcome to the forum.

The processor that you want to use is not listed in the ones that have been tested for compatibility with the motherboard.  If you will notice they are all 4 digits 9xxx ( up to 9850 Agena).  There is a good chance that the 960 will not work properly since HP has their motherboards made to their specs.

I really think you are mistaken.

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Phenom%20X4%209850%20-%20HD9850WCJ4BGH.html

Notice the model number is 4 digits 9854

Edit:Ok now I see it. I thought you were mistaken about the 4 digits because the cpu in question did have the four digits, it was just "9854" and "9850" is the highest. Oh well. I guess I could check ebay for a 9850. Yes you were mistaken because the model number 9854, not 960. So 4 digits.

It could be possible that HP gave an updated bios that made that cpu supported though. I say that because of the guy on ebay with that cpu installed in the same model pavilion.

Seriosly, take a look at this link, you'll have to scroll down a little bit and it'll mention the model pavilion p6210y and the same Cpu that I'm quesitoning.

The Latest bios bios update for pavilion p6210y was released on July 21st, 2010.

So it may have even been included in the bios update or an earlier one. I can't seem to find any earlier ones though. Everything points that it should work. If I purchase it on Amazon I can try it and return in the 30 day return period anyway.

Too bad I can't find earlier versions of the bios and descriptions of updates included.

It sounds like you have the situation under control, @Weevie45.  When you look at the information on a new BIOS, be certain to read the "Details".  It will give tell you what the update is correcting.  In most instances HP's updates don't simply cover on issue, such as, a processor upgrade.

Well they don't list older bios updates for some reason. They should. Also if they knowingly leave out updates that could allow new cpus that makes them look bad. It makes it look like they are doing that so people that don't know any better just purchase a newer model of one of their pcs to be able to run a newer model cpu. When in actuality they could have released a bios update that would allow that cpu. I never purchase store bought or pre-built pcs myself. This PC is a hand me down and not my main pc. If manufacturers of pre-built pcs didn't do things like this then they might actually sell more.

Now this CPU upgrade may work and may not work. It may be worth the time for me to at least try it out anyway. If doesn't work it's just the time that I'll lose because I will be able to return it.

@Weevie45, personally, I don't believe that it is realistic to expect a manufacturer to support 8 year old computers.  HP has thousands of new models that they have to support.  It is not a simple matter to develop new drivers and BIOS versions that will work perfectly every time.

Good luck with your upgrade.

I don't expect them to support 8 year old computers. The CPU that I would upgrade was released within 1 year of the release of that model pc. So it's not a current CPU, it's a legacy CPU used as an upgrade to older pc.

In fact, the bios update was released around 1 year after the cpu model I would use as an upgrade. So technically they were still supporting the pavilion p6210y.
