Hey everybody,

I´m using a three year old Z 440 workstation with a Xeon E5 1620 v3 CPU and a 212B mainboard. A client of mine is getting rid of a old server with a Xeon E5 2690 V3 CPU and I´m thinking of buying the CPU. Both CPUs are using the LGA 2011 3 socket

However I just checked with the Z 440 quickspecs (http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c04400038.pdf) and the E5 2690 V3 doesn´t show up in there.

Is the 2690 incompatible with my Z 440?

Best regards

Chris

I can't find any reason why that upgrade won't work, I would go for it if that is what you want.  The official HP docs aren't always perfect.

What are you using this pc for?

Do you really need 12 cores?

It does have a lower Processor Base Frequency, and a little lower Turbo.  It may run a little warmer also, I would inspect the cooling architecture in the Doner pc to see if it is better in some way.  If it is not then I don't think you will have an issue.  Personally I would stick with what you have, though I'm not running a Server or playing games.

The 12 cores would be neccessary for rendering 3D and motion graphics on a daily base. The lower processor base frequency would be a problem, yes. Apart from a it not working, this would be the second thing keeping me from buying it as all single thread works would be slowed down.
