Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

What is the maximum memory I can install in this machine running Win10 64bit?

It has 4GB on a one RAM module in one slot, and there is an empty slot. Maybe another 4GB?

4096 MB DDR3 / 1066 MHZ

HD is 500 GB ST500DM002-1BD142

This information is not available on this site under currently supported desktops, and is unknown among older desktops.

Virtual Agent is useless, although she led me here. 🙂

Thanks.

Thank you!

From the photos of the baseboards in those documents, my machine has the  APXD1-DM (Redwood 2) baseboard

which accepts up to 32 GB under a 64 bit OS, depending on the OS.

It has 4 GB, so I will get another 4 GB making a total of 8 GB.

Well listen it's great
I just asked you to tell me, if you find the model
and I would have told you what was possible
But you looked at yourself, very well
But beware, I might have given you two pieces of advice
The first, if you want 8gb,
Add a module as you say, but it may not work with the old one, it must be as close as possible
otherwise, you may be good to buy another identical one, if the new one works alone
the second, with 16 gb, it is much more comfortable, I published this, but in your case, if you only have 4 gb, of origin, I do not know if you will be able to realize

Add RAM

Thank you for the tip and the link to information about the need to add RAM.

1) Are you saying that another 4Gb module, even with the same specifications, may not work with my existing 4Gb module? Maybe it is better to upgrade to a single 8 or 16 GB module? I will check availability and prices.

2) This is the display for Memory in Task Manager (while running two tabs in Chrome only)

Memory 3.5/3.6 97%

In use (compressed)      Available   Hardware Reserve

3.4 GB (63.0 MB)             150 MB      436 MB

Committed             Cached

4.3 / 5.2 GB           220 MB

Paged pool          Non-paged pool

212 MB                 268 MB

Thank you again

Yes, it can happen..
So yes, it's up to you, I think 16 gb is enough for most users.
It is clear that the 4 gb, are indeed insufficient
it's up to you to see so try only one of 8 gb, then if necessary a second of 8 gb
you can even test the 8 gb, with that of 4 gb with 12 gb if it works; check if this is enough!

Last question(s)...

I have found this memory module at a price I can accept.

Brand: HP
MPN: 690802-B21
Part #: MEMHSV1996259
Memory Type: DDR3
Form Factor: DIMM
Memory Capacity: 8GB (1 x 8GB)
Memory Speed: 1600Mhz
CAS Latency: CL11
Error Checking: ECC Registered

Q1) Is this equivalent to what I have which is (see earlier original post)?

4096 MB DDR3 / 1066 MHZ

Note that the Speeds are different.

Mainboard memory upgrade information says:

  • Supports the following:
    • PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066)
    • PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333)

I do not want to order and pay, only to find that the machine will not run.

Q2) And will my existing 4096 MB DDR3 / 1066 MHZ  be happy with the 8 GB DDR3 / 1600Mhz in the other slot?

Does it matter which module goes in Slot 1?

Thank you for your advice about this.

if I understood correctly, what you indicate, no, it is not the right frequency
this must be the same as you already have, and/or what is mentioned for the motherboard
Either it won't work at all or the frequency could be lowered to what is usable by the motherboard, but in doubt

The document for my motherboard ( HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Motherboard Specifications, APXD1-DM (Redwood 2) | HP® Customer Support )

says *Supports up to 32 GB on 64-bit systems (with 16 GB DIMMs)"

so this means the memory upgrade path from 4GB DIMMs is to  another 4GB, or to  a 16GB DIMM (for 32 bit systems).

A 8GB module will not be recognised.

Is this your reading of that page?

Thanks
