@JamesD4 , welcome to the forum.
I believe that you mean the drive is vertical. You should open the drive fully. There is a spindle (rod) on the inside. You carefully and fully press the center of the DVD over the spindle. As stated, make certain that it is fully against the back of the tray. This is to assure that it doesn't fall out when you close the door. Then, you can close the door and play the DVD.
