OMEN by HP Desktop PC 880-120
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

How to install a second bottom hard drive in an OMEN by HP Desktop PC 880-120?
It has 2 HD slots on the bottom.

One slot has the 1-TB HD with the recovery partion and I want to install an SSD and keep the other one too.
I can't find a second SATA Data connector.
It has 2 SATA power connectors in one cable.

Thanks,

-DW

I didn't really solve my original problem but I did find a way to install my SSD.
I found an adapter that fits either of my top two drive bays.

New Real Solition:

Last night (Jan 3 2018) I was looking at the diagram of my motherboard and saw something I totally missed. I saw the two connectors each having two connect heads and a SEPARATE connector for the CW/DVD drive which I somehow missed before. I looked at the bottom connector and both heads were full. BUT the connector on the top connector had an open head. Went and bought a SATA Data cable and ran it to the vacant head to an SSD and guess what, it worked. Now I have two drives on top and two on the bottom.

Thanks to all that replied.

@Dream-Weaver, welcome to the forum.

You will have to buy a SATA "Y" adapter to connect the SSD.  If you haven't bought the SSD, I highly recommend that you buy a Samsung SSD.  They seem to work best with HP motherboards and BIOS'es.

The Product Specifications state that the is a 256 GB M.2 SSD available in the computer, also.  See the section titled "Hard drives".

Hi, old_geekster,

Thanks for the reply but the SATA "Y" adapter is only for power. I can't see anywhere to connect a cable for the data connector.

I need to know where to look.

This video shows how to swap one drive for another.

It shows two drives in the bottom bays, what it doesn't show is where the power and data cable connerctors originate from.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

@Dream-Weaver,

Your correct.   While the Power Supply (PSU) should have a spare SATA power lead, spare SATA dact cable are "never" supplied.  There are 4 SATA motherboard headers.  Their stacked in pairs along the edge of the board.

@Dream-Weaver,

Everytime you add another issue.  (All 4 SATA headers occupied).  OK ?

Lets work this out !!!! What is in each port ?   You said in the past replies the following:

1TB hard drive, and 1 DVD drive.

I only see 1 option, the PCIEx4 slot.   4 SATA ports.    Another M.2 card

@wb2001

Thanks for replying again. There are what HP calls 2 external slots for hard drives.

What I'm woundering is if I move the bottom 1TB HDD (the one with the recovery program) to one of those top slots will the recovery program find the drive to run the program?

Here's the video showing the top slots:

@Dream-Weaver,

Unless your willing to answer my questions as to what is connected to the 4 SATA ports, I can not assist you.

BTW<>The boot drive must not be moved off it's cablingThat was in the video that you offered.

@wb2001

Sorry if you didn't understand my last anawer :Crying:

There are 2-hdd's connected to the top bays and one in the bottom bay and then there's the cd/dvd.

The 2-top bays will not take an ssd and yes I tried many 3.5" to  2.5" adapters.

Not sure where the m.2 ssd gets it's power and data from.

Thanks for the help
