Anyone help with this please? I have the side cover off, the cage is in the bottom at the front on the other side, can't see mounting points of either cage or hard drive.

You're very welcome.
I doubt you will be able to recover any data from it if it is making noises and whatnot.
You might want to take it to a PC shop and ask them how much it would cost for them to try and recover any data from it.

Your replies much appreciated. I discover that the backup arrangement I set up some time ago to an external WD hard drive has been working and my data is secure up to and including last Sunday!
Can you please give me a pointer as to how to go about - or where to find instructions - on re-installing Win7 on a replacement hard drive? The drive is a seagate 1TB 7200 rpm sata. Thank you again, what a reprieve.

That is great news.
OK, here is what you can do to reinstall W7 if you can still read the 25 characters of the W7 product key on your PC's case.
You can download a W7 Home Premium ISO file from this site at the link below.
Click on the Windows ISO downloader link on the webpage.
I have zipped up and attached the Microsoft ISO to USB utility below so you can transfer the ISO file to a USB flash drive or DVD.

I do appreciate your help. The existing HDD is a seagate barracude 1TB model no ST31000528AS and part number 9SL154-024. Am I obliged to stick with this? I was recommended to put a WD Black model in by a data recovery man, and I presume it will need to be a minimum of 1TB.

You're very welcome.
You'll be fine with a WD Caviar Black.

I've ordered the drive, and it willbe here sometime after the weekend.
Another question please - my version of W7 was 64-bit - is this the version that's available from the link you gave me?
I found on the MS site a link to download Win7 64 and entered the product key, but the site told me as my software was preinstalled by the manufacturer - HP - I was out of luck.
I do have recovery disks that I made two or three years ago, might have to try those?
Thank you again!
Paul

Hi:
Try your recovery disks first, and if they don't work for whatever reason, you download that app on the webpage, run it, and it will allow you to download W7 Home or Pro, 32 or 64 bit, so just select the Home 64 bit.
You may want to try a dry run of that now and download the 64 bit Home file so you have it.
It is easy as pie to use.
