I tried upgrading my victus 15L from an i5 CPU to an i7-14700f, but it wouldn't work. In order to update my BIOS to get the i7 to work,  I took it out and put the old cpu back in, but now everytime I boot up the PC it almost immediately crashes during the initial hp boot up process. Any idea how to fix this?

@ADamJ2500,

I responded to your earlier question here: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Hp-victus-15L-CPU-upgrade/td-p/....

In response to this question:

Step-by-Step Fix for Crashing at Boot after CPU Swap:

1. Perform a CMOS Reset (Clear NVRAM)

This step is critical, especially after a failed CPU upgrade.

  • Power down the PC and unplug the power cable.

  • Hold the power button for 15 seconds to discharge any residual electricity.

  • Open the case and locate the CMOS battery (a coin-cell battery on the motherboard).

  • Remove the CMOS battery for 5–10 minutes, then reinsert it.

    • Alternatively, if the motherboard has a CMOS reset jumper (CLRTC), use that to clear settings.

  • Close the case, reconnect power, and try to boot again.

This clears any lingering voltage offsets, bad boot configs, or CPU-specific voltage values that might have been stored.

2. Use HP BIOS Recovery (F2 or Win+B):

If CMOS reset doesn't help:

  • Power off the system.

  • Press and hold the Win + B keys, then press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds.

  • Release all keys and wait. The BIOS recovery screen may load automatically.

  • If prompted, choose to update or recover BIOS using internal storage.

This can recover the BIOS even if startup fails after a CPU mismatch.

3. Reflash BIOS from USB (Optional, if the above fails):

If the system is semi-functional:

  • Download the latest BIOS (e.g., F.33 Rev.A) for TG02-1xxx: HP BIOS Download Link

  • Run the installer on a working PC to extract BIOS files to a USB stick.

  • Plug it into the Victus and repeat BIOS Recovery using Win + B.

4. After System Recovery:

Once the PC successfully boots with the original CPU:

  • Immediately enter BIOS (F10 on startup).

  • Reset BIOS to defaults (F9).

  • Then install the BIOS update to F.33 if not already done.

  • Optional but recommended: Use HP Support Assistant to check chipset/microcode updates.

Additional Advice for the i7-14700F Upgrade:

  • The i7-14700F is supported by the RenoR2, as confirmed via UserBenchmark.

  • However, the "F" processor is without integrated graphics, the system must have a working discrete GPU.

  • Use QuickCPU to limit CPU power to 150-watt or less after booting into Windows with the new chip.

  • Ensure thermal paste is reapplied correctly and your cooler is adequate.

  • Finally, make sure you got BIOS F.33 installed before inserting the i7-14700F again.

  • Btw, make sure your 13th gen processor and CPU socket are not damaged/has any debris stuck on it.

Kind Regards,
