Hi i bought the new hp omen 45l desktop and i bought a new hdd. a seagate ironwolf nas 8tb. the hdd keeps randomly disconnecting. i tried a new sata cable and it didnt do it for like 24 hours. prior the hdd would disconnect every 1-8 hours. i turned on the xmp setting under the bios. could that be drawing to much power and like stealing power form the hdd or something? sorry if that question is silly but i only know a little bit about computers. please help! i am trying tons of different troubleshoots to no avail. i am hoping it is somehow the xmp setting. other wise it could be a faulty psu from what ive read and i would have to send my new pc back and have them send me another one. is there a setting in the bios that i just cant find to turn on the hdd? event though ive already saved multiple things to it so im assuming its not that i need to turn it on in the bios. please for the love of god help. ive had so many issues with pcs before i got this one and this is the pc i am super happy with. i dont want to return it.

@CuriousGeorge00 -- I see three possibilities:
- the computer is faulty
- the 8TB disk-drive is faulty
- both the computer and the 8TB disk-drive are faulty.
For #1, return/exchange the computer.
For #2, return/exchange the disk-drive.
What you do for #3 depends on the results of #1 & #2, above.

hi
"seagate ironwolf nas 8tb "
https://www.seagate.com/support/internal-hard-drives/nas-drives/ironwolf/
check, you have purchased a hard drive for particular system
may just not be compatible
choose a suitable hard drive if that's it

@CuriousGeorge00 -- i have already saved multiple things to [to HDD]
So, it is compatible, but it has a fault -- it just "drops" after "1-to-8" hours, as you have stated.
Since it is "brand new", I would copy all your "things" to an external USB memory-stick, and then exercise the 12 month HP Warranty to get it repaired/replaced. Of course, you would have to remove your "replacement" disk-drive, and reinstall the "original" disk-drive, before you send it away.
Or, did you purchase the 8TB disk-drive from a retail store? If so, return it, and exchange it.
It will have a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer, if the retail store does not replace it.

i think i found a command prompt to stop it from happening. i used my pc all night and i realized it never disconnects when the computer is running. the hdd only disconnects when my pc is in sleep mode. also it doesnt do it right away. my pc has to be in sleep mode for quite a few hours for it to disconnect. so i think its a power saving setting turning off my hdd on my pc. hopefully this helps. also no duh the pc could be faulty or the hdd could be faulty to who ever said that. that is the worst advice i have ever seen. pointing out the most obvious solution that anyone could think of is generally not helpful. thank you for any other suggestions

most modern sata drives have firmware that tells the drive to power down after a set period of time has passed without any activity (in order to save electricity and wear and tear on the drive) and spin up when you access it this behaviour can usually be modified in the computers bios and/or by using the drive makers util program such as seatools for seagate drives

Personally, I have purchased a brand-new disk-drive that was "faulty". Spit Happenz.
If you did not tell us what you have tried, such as running the HP Hardware Diagnostics, and selecting the "long DST" -- to do an extensive test of your disk-drive -- that is your omission.
Please do not "shoot the messenger" -- with only the limited information that you supplied, and with the only method of communication is posting to this discussion forum, any volunteer contributor can only make a limited reply.
In your case, the real solution is to return/exchange the disk-drive, especially so if the "Long DST" reports any error.
If the disk-drive is giving you this much of a problem when it is brand-new, I think that it will continue to give you problems.

@CuriousGeorge00 sorry, for the comments, it doesn't help, I think
for my part, when you indicated that the hdd disconnects, I understand that it is therefore unusable..
Standby settings must actually allow the player to be stopped, in order to save energy, but it must also be able to be reused, without the need to restart the computer for example
Sorry, if I didn't understand what situation you are in exactly.
if I said that the HDD may not be compatible, it's because I read an article, which went in this direction
https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/products/nas-drives/compatibility/
So therefore it would have been possible that the hdd could work, but not being fully compatible, causing this type of problem
Unfortunately it is easier to try, to discredit others, than to seek a real solution.
I wish you good luck

nah i said thank you to all other suggestions. your answer was insightful. the only suggestion i thought was just silly was the guy who said, "either return the computer or return the hdd". also the windows setting was disconnecting it because i did have to restart the computer to get the hdd to turn back on. but after i did the command prompt the issue stopped and it was a windows power saving command prompt. so there was an issue with the power saving software.

im not shooting the messenger. i was looking for "out of the box" solutions. not some condescending answer. if i look for a solution as to, "why wont my car start?" and you say, "buy a new car or return the car and get a new one". thats a bad answer isnt it?
