I’ve successfully installed the SSD using both the data and power cables that were originally connected to the HDD.

The optical drive power connector goes to an optical drive that is uses a standard SATA data but the power connector much smaller. You can only us the OD drive power cable with an OD drive.

However, your new SDD has the same power connector as the HDD.  If you want to add an additional SDD then just use that Y cable I referenced.  Unplug the power from the SSD and connect the Y cable to it or get something like this for slimline to standard 22 pin drive

I believe this is your motherboard. let me know if it is not.

1 - You may already have a 1tb HDD there.
2 - The power cable there can have an SATA splitter or "Y" cable added such as any of these
3 - you probably have the M.2 drive there but you could clone it into a 2tb size if you want to.
4 - if not using the optical drive then connect SSD there but you will need an SATA power splitter.

Hi,
Thanks for the detailed response earlier! I’ve made some progress but ran into an issue with the SATA power connection.

I’ve successfully installed the SSD using both the data and power cables that were originally connected to the HDD. Now, the only available cables are from the optical drive (both data and power).

The problem is that the HDD power connector is different from the optical drive power connector. The data cable from the optical drive works fine with the SSD, but the power connector is not the standard SATA type — it’s some kind of proprietary HP connector.

Also, I checked the HDD power port, and since it’s not a standard SATA port, a Y-splitter or SATA power splitter won’t work there.

Could you clarify if:

  1. There’s an adapter or converter available to use the optical drive’s power connector for the SSD?
  2. Or if there's another way to pull SATA power directly from the board or PSU using a splitter or other workaround?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi,

Thanks for the detailed response earlier! The power issue is sorted out now — your advice on the Y cable and slimline connector was spot on. I really appreciate it!

However, I’ve hit a new problem:

  • The SSD is installed properly and is working, but Windows is detecting it as a USB device instead of a SATA drive.
  • It's listed as a SCSI device in Device Manager, even though it's connected to the SATA1 port.
  • I’ve tried swapping the SATA ports and updating drivers, but the issue persists.
  • Also, I checked the BIOS, but there’s no option to change the SATA mode (like setting it to AHCI).

Any ideas on how to fix the SSD detection so it’s correctly recognized as a SATA drive?

Thanks again for all the help so far! 😊

Best regards

It is not unheard of for windows to report SSD as USB

The same can be said for SATA as SCSI

I assume you disconnected your optical drive (if you had one) and  It appears you have a 5.25 size HDD at the SATA connector "1".  You also have a 2.5 size SSD on the optical drive SATA connector "4" and you have nothing connected at the M.2 which I labeled with Arrow "3"

Is this correct?

Is the 2.5 SSD your windows boot drive, "C:" ?

You product spec is here and I see that the OD is optional.

what happened to the 256 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD?  Did it come with an NVMe?

That is correct. When the PC was purchased, it had an HDD, and 2 .5" SATA SSD was recently added. The SSD is now the boot drive(C:). After swapping the SSD and HDD ports, the HDD connected to that port is being detected as a USB device in Task Manager. The system didn't come with an NVMe (although it have an NVMe port to add) just the SATA SSD and HDD. Any idea why HDD is showing up as USB and how this can be fixed?

If you swapped ports then the HDD is now connected to the optical drive connector.  Is that right?

Right click on the D drive and try ejecting it.  if you can cannot eject it then there is no problem with your system.  if you can eject it then there is potentially a problem as it is not really a USB device.  See if your bios has the option to make the OD''s SATA fixed instead of hot swappable or removable.  I currently have a disk partition that shows up as removable when I know it is not.

Your 2.5 ssd runs at the same speed as the HDD so you should use the NVMe for the OS.  It will be way faster.

Unless I am mistaken, you do not have cloud recovery but you can check here to see.  if you have it then install on the NVMe. Otherwise put win11 or whatever OS you use on the NVMe.

Thanks for the support! 😊
I tried ejecting the D drive, but it’s not ejecting, so it looks like there’s no problem with the system. If the SSD and HDD have the same speed as SATA, then it’s all good even if it shows up as USB. Thanks again for the help! 🙌
