Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Maybe I'm crazy, but I am interested in Improving my Pavilion's ability for gaming... primarily War Thunder.

This Desktop sold by Staples has a Radeon RX 550 on top of the AMD Ryzen 5 2400G with Radeon Vega Graphics 3600 built in.

Yesterday, I ended up installing AMD Software: Adrenaline Edition to update my drivers only to be told that my performance was minimal at best.

No surprise there, with a Con-pewter that's over 7 years old. (A machine made out of Pewter that will Con you out of everything you have. Piers Anthony)

Is there a GPU that I can upgrade to that won't require replacing the Power Supply? (310 Watts)

Can you help with adding 32 GB or Ram?

Please n Thanks!

I'm capable of installing Linux once Windows 10 support ends, and will do so to avoid Microsoft's constant **bleep**.

The Ol' Girl has served me well.

On the other hand... A mini-desktop PC might be nice.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Andy.

@Andycapp61,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Yes, I can definitely assist you to upgrade your venerable HP Pavilion Desktop 590-p0xxx.

These are two power supply upgrade options available for you:

400-watt with p/n: L04618-800

500-watt with p/n: 901759-013

Depending what graphics card you have in mind, i.e. -what budget you want to work with.

I would go with 2x16GB of DDR4 PC4-25600, 3200 MHz, Non-ECC, UDIMM, 288-pin RAM kit, such as Crucial p/n: CT2K16G4DFRA32A.

If you haven't done so already, I would use your motherboard's M.2 NVMe SSD slot to install an M.2 NVMe SSD as your primary (boot) drive for sheer speed and performance.

Please let me know what motherboard you got: type in System Information in your lower Windows search window, click on the System Information app, and look to the right of "BaseBoard Product", and let me know what it says.

Kind Regards,

@Andycapp61,

Never mind, I believe you got the Sunflower motherboard (SSID: 8433) based on the Ryzen 5 2400G you have installed.

I have good news for you: upgrade to the Ryzen 7 2700 and you got yourself not just a major processor upgrade wonderful for gaming, but also a Windows 11 eligible processor!

Please note, there are a number of trusted and convenient ways to upgrade to W11 without having an eligible processor. If you are interested in that, let me know.

Hey Non Sequitur.

You're correct. The Motherboard is HP 8433 Version 11.

I was hoping to upgrade the Video card / GPU first, but apparently the original 310 Watt Power Supply won't allow a modern Radeon, or something similar.

I would gladly upgrade everything on the ol' girl, but the big question is, " How long will the Motherboard last?"

This HP has been running most of its life... it's seldom been shut down. (having been taught that expansion and contraction was the killer back in the "dark ages" of computing.)

I am aware that the AMD Ryzen 7-2700 would be good, and it's available.

Is there a way to determine how much life is remaining on the Motherboard?

Andy.

@Andycapp61,

That’s a great question -and it’s clear you’ve taken good care of your old girl system. Your HP Pavilion 590-p0xxx with the Sunflower motherboard (SSID: 8433) and Ryzen 5 2400G has served you well, and it's smart to think ahead before upgrading.

“How long will the motherboard last?”

There’s no precise tool to measure how much life is left in a consumer motherboard, but several indicators can give you confidence:

Good signs your motherboard is still in great shape:

  • Stable performance: No crashes, freezing, or power-on issues.

  • No damage: No bloated (bulging) or leaky capacitors, corrosion, or burn marks.

  • Healthy temps: VRMs, CPU socket, and chipset temperatures stay within normal ranges under load.

  • No odd behavior: USB, audio, network, and RAM slots are all working properly.

Always-on use: Harmful or helpful?

Your instinct is actually correct:

Running a system continuously is often less stressful than frequently turning it on and off, which causes thermal cycling -one of the culprits behind microfractures in solder joints, especially in older hardware.

So, if your machine’s been mostly running non-stop, you may have actually prolonged its lifespan in my opinion.

Considering an upgrade to the Ryzen 7 2700?

Personally, I think this would be an excellent move. The Ryzen 7 2700 (8 cores / 16 threads) is the best officially supported CPU for your Sunflower motherboard. It has a noticeable boost over the Ryzen 5 2400G, especially for multitasking, content creation, or even emulation/gaming.

BIOS Reminder:

To support the Ryzen 7 2700, make sure your system is running BIOS version F.30 or newer.

The latest BIOS available for your system is F.60 Rev.A, dated August 25, 2023, available here: HP BIOS F.60 Download (SP142014)

Is there a way to test the motherboard’s remaining life?

There’s no built-in "wear level" reading like with SSDs, but here’s what you can do:

  • Run HP UEFI Diagnostics (press F2 at startup) and check the System Board Test

  • Use tools like HWiNFO to monitor voltages and thermal sensors

  • Visually inspect the motherboard for heat damage or corrosion

  • Check for BIOS POST beep codes (which can warn of VRM or chipset faults)

Other Tips to Prolong Life:

  • Keep the interior dust-free

  • Ensure good airflow and cooling

  • Use a high-quality surge protector and preferably a UPS

Bottom Line:

If your Pavilion is still running reliably, there’s no ticking time bomb. With good care and a stable power source, the Sunflower motherboard can easily last 10+ years -and it sounds like you're well on your way there.

Go ahead with the Ryzen 7 2700 upgrade -it would be a worthwhile investment that can breathe new life into your system for years to come.

Let me know if you need help with the CPU upgrade, thermal paste, or anything else!

Kind Regards,

Thanks for the praise, Non Sequitur.

A buddy and I used to offer PC support to Friends n Family, primarily for the experience.

Spencer was the Tech, and I was support. (Mainly in charge of Beverages)

On 1 occasion We opened a neighbours Tower to find the Case completely filled with a Dust Bunny!

It was so bad, the fans wouldn't turn... sorry the pic is long gone. LOL.

Ever since then I have run a Skeleton and cleaned it regularly with compressed air.

I had no interest in Con-Pewters prior to shattering my lower left leg in 1997 other than operating the terminal in the Restaurant / Bar I would work in.

Thankfully a family friend recognized I was going insane sitting in a wheelchair, and assisted in my first PC build. Ken had me assemble it while he supervised, then loaded me down with Software to play with Free of Charge.

Various other people assisted in my PC education over the years: now You.

None of them were considered Experts, though. Thanks for all you do for people like me!

I sure wish I had read Your post before I updated the Bios.

Boomer Eyes lead to me grabbing the 2023 version, but after 2 attempts I am up to where I need to be for the Ryzen 7200, should I be able to get it.

I can't get the Driver wizard to install... error -3, if it means anything coherent.

Regarding the Motherboard... I haven't noticed any real issues like crashing etc., but will endeavor to run some of the diagnostic programs you suggested. (Given Time)

My Hard Drive (Brain) is full of probably useless info.  Sometimes I need to Re-boot repeatedly before I operate within Normal Parameters. (Yesterday was 1 of those days)

Sure wish I could Re-Format, start over fresh. LOL.

I will need to purchase Ram to run Windows 11 as this machine only came with 12 GB. I'm thinking 32 GB.

I am concerned that the 310 Watt Power Supply won't cut these upgrades or a new Video Card / GPU.

I specifically pointed to this issue when I bought this Pavillion 7+ years ago.

Some of my concerns come from a Post here at HP regarding upgrading the GPU in a similar machine.

If I have to replace the Power Supply, Processor, GPU, and Ram, won't a Mini PC be cheaper / more effective in the long run.

Don't get Me wrong...

I was raised by my Grandparents. Taught that everything is alive. Everything Alive deserves to Live as Long as Possible.

Can You recommend a Reliable Computer Parts Supplier?

Getting to one on my Snowmobile can be difficult here in Canada.

Like most Canadians I am pissed at Trump, his tariffs, and the American people for being stupid enough to let him take Power again.

Thanks for Listening / Support.

Sorry for the Rant.

Andy.

@Andycapp61,

As an expatriate Dutchman, I am most unhappy with what is going on in the US, but since this is not a social media platform, let's stick to the computer issues at hand.

As far as computer parts is concerned, that depends.

Personally, I would use Amazon or another eCommerce site available to you to buy RAM, drives and a graphics card.  You said that your PC came with 12GB of RAM, that is likely one 8GB RAM stick and one 4GB RAM stick.  I would replace this RAM with a matching 2x16GB DDR4 2666 MHz UDIMM RAM kit, such as this Amazon-Canada purchase option: https://www.amazon.ca/Timetec-2666MHz-PC4-20800-Unbuffered-Non-ECC/dp/B07CQ8FJXB/ref=sr_1_4?crid=179....

Regarding a graphics card, what is it you want to do (play) and what is your budget?

For a processor and HP power supplies, eBay is the place to go.  For example, you can purchase a Ryzen 7 2700 via this eBay-Canada site -make sure you select the Ryzen 7 2700 and not the Ryzen 7 2700X: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/186477814527?_skw=Ryzen+7+2700&itmmeta=01JX1QG4AXM3G7BW4YJQ1N7X6X&hash=item2....

Also, I would recommend upgrading your power supply to the 400-watt option, with p/n: L04618-800, such as this eBay-Canada purchase option: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/196653382171?_skw=L04618-800&itmmeta=01JX1QRYK38CATG3JJMRCMDQME&hash=item2dc....

Thanks for your patience and recommendations, Non Sequitur.

I'm actually in Victoria, British Columbia, rather than the Great White North. (No snowmobile necessary)

Having grown up so close to the US, I had deep connections with relatives, etc., across the border.

Hence, my frustrations... especially considering the US was built by people like yourself. (Canada also)

I usually spend around $1000.00 (CAN) when I replace my system to give you an idea.

Whether I can do that in the next few months, is questionable.

It seems like every other day something starts to fail. Mr. Microwave is on his last legs...

Can I replace the Ram and Ryzen chip without upgrading the Power Supply?

That would allow me to upgrade to Windows 11 should I choose to do so.

Then I can replace the Power Supply, upgrade the Video Card / GPU.

I wasn't aware that my Motherboard supported a Solid State Drive. Thanks.

I was kind of hoping HP would sell me parts. My misconception.

As I am not familiar with ordering Con-pewter parts through eBay / Amazon, I am concerned about warranty issues and returns.

That, and the fact that Items delivered have disappeared from the Lobby of my building on numerous occasions.

Having been gifted with an I.Q. in the 170's I should be able to adapt, and overcome my other issues. (Old Age, Anxiety, ADHD, Dyslexia, etc.,) LoL!

Do you know anyone who sells Self Confidence,? "I can't seem to find mine."

In my 1 of my previous Posts I mentioned that the "Driver Wizard" wouldn't open. Error -3.

HPSupportSolutionsFramework-13.0.1.131.exe is the program I was speaking of.

Can you suggest a work around or new drivers for the new Bios?

How do I show my Gratitude for your support? I don't see a Gratuity Button.

Thanks, Non Sequitur.

I will do my best to "Pay Forward" everything You have shared with Me.

Andy.
