6200 Microtower (core i7 3.4Ghz)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an old HP 6200 Microtower (Intel Core i7-2600 (3.40 GHz, 8MB cache, 4 cores) running Windows 10 Pro x64 v. 1903. The official HP specs (https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-compaq-6200-pro-microtower-pc/5037909/document/c02779499#AbT...) state the maximum supported internal HDD size for this model is 1TB as limited by motherboard.

However what if I install a PCIe SATA card (e.g. https://www.mwave.com.au/product/startech-4-port-pcie-sata-iii-controller-card-ab66957) and connect a larger internal HDD (e.g. 4TB) to this card? Will that work?

Just finished a chat with a startech rep and unfortunately nothing can overcome the motherboard limitation of 1TB on this machine.

ACTUALLY:

There's been a further development. I realised the maximum HDD size in the official spec sheet were just the HDD size options available with the HP 6200 when it was originally sold!

My subsequent research reveals a 2TB drive is certainly no problem for the motherboard and can probably even go larger than that so long as booting into UEFI and creating GPT disks!!!

No need for an additional SATA card.

@sydDoug , welcome to the forum.

Here is the card on StarTech's website:  https://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/HDD-Controllers/SATA-Cards/4-Port-PCI-Express-SATA-6Gbps-RAI...

I suggest that you use their "Chat Live" option and ask their Tech Support if it will work.  They are the experts on their products.  I have used their Tech Support for years with great success!  This will save you time, money and frustration.
