Hi:
Please post the hardware ID's for the devices that need drivers.
Use this guide for how to find the hardware ID for a device.

The Intel chipset drivers should have gotten the USB 2 ports to work. Noo additional drivers are required.
Might be that model has an optional add-on USB 3.0 card?
You have a great Thanksgiving too!

I found the reason the usb ports won't work, they all have 32 bit drivers. I went to the Intel site that has th Win7 64 bit drivers for Compaq 8200 but they won't update. Intel, or Windows, or someone with no sense of humor says the current 32 bit drivers are up to date. So I uninstalled the drivers which causes the ports to disappear in Device Manager. They return when the machine is rebooted but, of course, with the 32 bit drivers.
So since the brand new wireless keyboard and mouse won't work on usb 32 ports I'm stuck using a junk ps2 mouse/board, both of which are heading to the burn pile shortly. I'm afraid my patient tends to run thin after repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result. I've just been away from this stuff too long..or not long enough. Assistance is greatly needed and I'll forever be in your debt.

Hi, sorry, I should have included the info on the ports but I'm not sure what is needed and there really isn't much.
It's a sub-group under Unversal Serial Bus controllers. There are two Generic USB Hubs with a device description of Gerneric USB Hub. They are reloading a Microsoft driver dated 2006 which once uninstalled, they disappear until reboot and then reload the 32 driver
Two Intel 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USb Enhanced HOst Controller- 1C2D and 1C26
Intel 6 Series/C200 PCI Bus 0, device 29, function 0
Two USB Root Hub Universal Serial Bus controller on Intel 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset
Family USB Enhanced Hose Controller- 1C2D
I even tried DriverToolKit to update the drivers but it also saw them as working properly.
The 2.0 driver loaded but it would not recognize any thing using the port. I checked for the addition of a bus for additional ports and it looks stock, no extras.
I have tried Intel to get the correct drivers but since there isn't anything wrong with the 32 bit drivers, I can't even download the correct drivers.
And I still have to call Microsoft to sort out the key on this machine. One thing that's impressive, I'm used to having a 9 year old Windows XP box that takes over a minute and a half to boot. This machine is done before I can bring the mouse back to the Windows Start button. But I'm sure I'll fix that!
Thanks again

I'm sorry vmpresta, I didn't see your post until just now (11/23). I know it certainly looks like I simply neglected to respond but that was not the case at all. There is no way I'd turn down assistance from anyone.
As a matter of fact, Win7 iso did install and run after several tries. When I first tried to install it from usb with Paul's assistance it would not boot from the usb drive. As it turns out, the usb ports were not functioning. I then loaded the iso to a dvd and it did read that. The first time I attempted to register the software with the key on the label it was refused as invalid. I just received the warning that Microsoft would attempt to register it within one day so I entered the key again and this time they accepted it. Microsoft started updating as soon as I went to shut the computer down last night and it was done around 4:30 this am. When the computer rebooted, the activity light on a plugged in usb flash drive lit up but since it was still seen as a 32 bit port I assume that it was just the fact that the port was powered which I knew it was, it just wouldn't transfer data.
This caused me to raise the question of downward compatibility. Even though the system is 64 bit, would that stop 32 bit drivers for usb ports to not work? This is the only issue now with the installation of an iso which I had never done before. That reminds me, I read on another post that someone else was having a similar problem and the fix was to take the 64 bit drivers from a Windows XP disk and move them to their iso install. I'm not real hot on intentionally creating additional conflicts so I think I'll leave that one alone. I create enough conflicts by accident. If you have any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. Again, I apologize for not seeing your post earlier.

Hi, I up loaded the wrong file I'd saved on the ids. I'm getting more than a bit flustered.
1 iNTEL 6 SERIES/C200 SERIES Port

These are the correct ones. I saw on another post that support for 3.0 drivers won't work on this 8200. I'm sure that I've tried to download that driver as an act of either desperation or stupidity. Of course they didn't work.
Am I doing the right thing by uninstalling the 32 bit drivers before trying to reload the 64 bit? Once the drivers are uninstalled the computer needs to reboot to impliment the changes. Problem is, Windows7 reloads the drivers available, but from where? Mincrosoft says they don't include drivers in their iso downloads and it was doing this before I downloaded drivers from Drivertoolkit, which I will be deleting. It almost seems as if the correct drivers have to be included in a startup file which I hoped to avoid. I'm remembering just enough to be dangerous. The problem if I don't uninstall the drivers is the Intel and HP both treat the drivers as proper.
By the way, these 8200 elite convertables are real screamers even without the addition of a video card. Once the video drivers were installed Windows experience had the lowest score at 4.9 on the graphics but abover 7 on everthing else. HD was maxed at 7.9.
I'm not quit sure how to read your last post. Are you giving up on this or just no advice on a goofy ps2 mouse and a Toys R Us keyboard? My frustration caused me to include a smidgeon of editorial comment which I know isn't a part of diagnosing a computer problem. Just let me know and if I need to, I'll start a new thread. I appreciate your help so far. I don't believe I could have gotten this far on my own.
