The computer was hibernating and i got the error with windows recovery screen but not beeing able to choose an option. I tried multiple restarts and the keyboard still not working. Since i have no ps2 port and my only option is usb i cannot anable usb ports from bios since i cannot access bios. There is no bios button on motherboard. F10 does not work. The keyboard is HP and the numpad is on after reatart.
I have tried to remove the battery twice for more then 5 min. I had tried to do a reset to CMOS 2-3 then putting it back to 1-2. I have tried a windows 7 cd but i cannot boot because keyboard is not working. Please offer assistance because it is beyond my expertize. Thank you.

Hi @Cosminalex,

Good Day.  Thank you for taking an interest in the HP community. I understand that you are not able to access the bios with the keyboard. I will be really glad to assist you here. 🙂

Fabulous description and superb diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

For me to assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this.

Why do you need to access the bios?

Please perform these steps:

  • Please perform a hard reset from this link: http://support.hp.com/za-en/document/c01463028
  • Then connect a USB wired keyboard and mouse to the desktop computer
  • It looks like a wireless keyboard that you are using. So please use a wired keyboard and mouse using a USB port and access the bios. It should work.
  • Wireless keyboards don’t work outside of windows to access the bios.
  • The wired USB keyboard should help you access the bios without hassles. You don’t need to enable the USB ports to access the bios. Pressing F10 as soon as you power on the computer should help you access the bios.
  • Once you access the bios, you could load the bios defaults from this link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00364979
  • To run system diagnostics on the computer please visit this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02491515 and run the extensive tests to ensure that the computer hardware is fully functional based on the type of diagnostics that has been installed on the computer.
  • It could be HP Vision Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostic Tools. Please select the correct one to run the diagnostics.
  • If you have any further issues with the computer, don’t worry. I am always there to assist you.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, please. Please note that I am not overloading you with a lot of troubleshooting steps. Instead, just like you, I am eager to ensure that the problem gets resolved. So I am providing you with more resources and information at your disposal to deal with the situation better.

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great

.

Take care now and have a superb week ahead. 🙂

Hi David. I have tried a hard reset and the computer is still not recognizing they keyboard. It is a wired HP keyboard. I have tried the keyboard on laptop and it works perfectly. No matter what i did the desktop is not recognizing the keyboard. If I disconnect the hard drive and i place only windows 7 cd inside it boots the windows recovery and the keyboard works but then i cannot connect the hardrive. So the problem still remains that after a hard reset keyboard is not letting me to access bios.

You have asked me the reason that i am trying to access bios. At this point windows does not load so i am trying to put the option to boot from cd-rom as a first option because when it says 'press any key to continue booting' i can not press so it boots the hard drive with the corupted windows. I just can not understand why they keyboard which is wited usb does not connect with the desktop but works fine on any other computer

@Cosminalex

It looks like you were interacting with @DavidSMP, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out,

I'm the Riddle_Decipher & I'm at your service.

If you've tried more than one keyboard with different USB ports within your desktop and it still doesn't work, it's most probably your desktop and not the keyboard that needs a repair, I recommend you troubleshoot the computer further:

The best way to do that is using the HP Guided Troubleshooter:

Click here to access it (simply select your description of the issue from the bottom of the screen to gain access to the next set of steps that should resolve your concern).

Let me know how that works out, keep me in the loop and Good luck! 😉

I have managed to reinstall Windows 7. The computet works fine. The problem still remains that I can not access BIOS at all because until windows boots they keyboard does not work. The funny part is no matter what button i press in the booting the Num lock button remains on. I have tried F10 i have tried FN+F10 and all othet combinations. The computer is fine but the problem is I can not access BIOD. I need to access BIOS because if at any point i need to reinstall windows i will need to be able to put the option to boot the CD at first. Otherwise it tells me to press a button to Boot from cd which i can not since keyboard does not work.
Now to install windows i had to remove the hard drive and the computer booted the cd in that case. That in the installation menu with the computer on i have plugged the hard drive and in few seconds i was able to fix the windows. Any ideea why keyboard does not work in bios? A wired HP usb keyboard

Hi @Cosminalex,

I reviewed the response. I am happy for you. that the computer is working. You've been simply amazing and meticulous in your troubleshooting paying thorough attention to detail. 🙂 Brilliant stuff. 🙂 Kudos to you for that and it is greatly appreciated. 🙂

Please try these steps again to access the bios. Trust me I've done everything I can to assist you by keeping your best interest in mind. 🙂

Please perform a hard reset after disconnecting all the components again.

  • Then reconnect only the keyboard, mouse and monitor back. Then first keep tapping the "Esc" key on the keyboard gently several times and later power on the computer. Please continue tapping this key even as it powers on.
  • This should take you to the startup menu.
  • Here if you press the F10 key it should take you to the bios. You could then press F9 to reload setup defaults and press F10 to save changes and exit.
  • This should work.

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes and do keep me posted about it. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂

Take care now, stay healthy, keep smiling big and do have a blessed year ahead. 🙂
