Hi, I will be upgrading the current m.2 128GB SSD to a new m.2 1TB SSD in this desktop- but need to know what type is compatible? Can it be a NVMe or is it only SATA? The motherboard is sunflower SSID 8433 - can anyone advise? Thank you

Hi @PCJJ

Welcome back to the Forum.

690-0034 specs at this Site show your PC has a 128 GB PCIe NVME M.2 drive.

A slower SATA M.2 drive would probably not be detected. I would not do a SATA drive even if it worked with your MB and BIOS/ chipset.

Hi, thank you! It is odd, because the SSD in my desktop says it is a SATA version, that's why I wasn't sure if the NVME would also work. (Current 128GB M.2 SSD is MZ-NLN128C)

My pleasure.

That's interesting.

Try Crystal Disk Info Free (Zip version) at this Site to verify this.

A SATA M.2 socket would have two missing contacts. The SATA M.2 SSD would also have two missing pins which match the missing socket contacts.

PCIe NVME M.2 drives have one missing pin.

Some MB M.2 sockets can support both SATA and PCIe. Some MB M.2 sockets only support one protocol. It is up the the MB manufacturer.

I have hwinfo already installed, will that help?

Greetings @PCJJ

I also use HWiNFO. I don't see a M.2 PCIe or SATA indicator listed in the drives section with my version of HWiNFO. I have Samsung PCIe: 980 Pro and 970 EVO M.2 drives installed in my Asus MB.

If you see the M.2 drive listed as a SATA drive in HWiNFO then that's probably what you have.

HP is not defining the supported protocols for the M.2 socket in your MB so it is unclear if your M.2 socket can support both SATA and PCie.

Remove the drive and look at the M.2 socket config.

This would be so easy to clarify if HP would define M.2 drive support on your MB. I could not find this information at HP. Your PC's spec link in my first response was from a third party site.

HP now provides this info on newer MBs. This was not the case back in the early M.2 socket days.
