Compaq dc7900 Ultra slim Deskt
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

The machine's specification is:

HP Compaq dc7900 Ultra slim Desktop

d7900eU/E8400/160hq/2T/16rk UK

hp s/n:  [personal information removed]

p/n: FU039ET#ABU

2.00GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 398MHz (6-6-6-18)

There are apparently two sockets for RAM.  I would like to increase RAM to the maximum acceptable.

Can someone tell me  please?

Thank you

Respected brands are Crucial, Kingston, G.Skill, Patriot.

Those are the only brands I have used, and never had any problems with any of those manufacturers.

There may be other decent brands too, but the above 4 are probably the most popular and affordable.

Can't tell you which ones to avoid but if you are really thinking about upgrading to 8 GB, then plan to pay around $175 for a pair new.

You could get a used HP 8000 Elite USDT for less than that, and it uses the much faster and less expensive DDR3 memory.

Hi:

Below is the link to the quickspecs for that model.

Memory upgrade info can be found on page 12.  2 x 4 GB is the max (8 GB ttl).

The problem is that you will find that a 4 GB PC2-6400 memory module is very expensive nowadays.

Thank you Paul for your quick reply.

I must admit that I'm a bit confused by the different notations.  What's the relation between   DDR2 SYNCH DRAM using SO-DIMM, and PC2-6400 memory?

You're very welcome.

DDR2 SYNCH DRAM using SO-DIMM, refers to the form factor of the memory.

SO-DIMM memory is used in notebook PC's, and a few desktop PC's, such as the dc7900 USDT

PC2-6400 refers to the speed at which the memory runs.

So, you need PC2-6400 SO-DIMM memory modules for the USDT model.

Could you also tell me the most respected brands and, perhaps more importantly, brands to be avoided?

Thank you that information.  I will stick to buying more RAM.  I don't completely trust used computers.

You're very welcome.

Every HP desktop PC I've ever owned, except for one, I got on eBay used.
