HP Compaq 8100 and 8180 Elite Business PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Recently purchased a HP Compaq 8100 and 8180 Elite Business PC on Amazon from TechnoCanada. Everything runs fine but when booted up it gives me the following error;

"1801-Microcode Update Error

Missing or Invalid Processor Microcode Update. Please contact

Hewlet-Packard Company for a new Microcode Update to support the

  new Processor Stepping"

I've looked around online for solutions, I've seen some but haven't been able to quite understand them, I also couldn't figure out how to contact HP for a new Microcode Update if that's the only way for them to fix it. It would be very much appreciated if you're able to help me ASAP! Thanks, Dawson!

That must be the original BIOS.

Looking at the support page, it appears that BIOS v 1.04 - Adds support for Intel Core i3-5xx and Intel Core i5-6xx Series K-0 Stepping Processors.

So...I recommend you update the BIOS to the latest version which is 1.13.

You will have to use the F10 System Setup flash method because the Windows BIOS update was not written to be run on W8 or newer.  It is very easy to do and I will walk you through the steps.

First download and run the BIOS update file.  An information page will open.

1.13

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp53501-54000/sp53945.exe

Follow the guidance under the:

                                                                                          F10 Setup BIOS Flashing

The HP Business Desktop system supported by this softpaq provides a BIOS upgrade option through F10 setup using the "Flash System ROM" feature. Reboot the PC and press F10 to enter setup. In the File menu, select the "Flash System ROM" item. This flash utility will present the user with the option to select the media containing the BIOS image file (XXX_MMmm.bin). The binary image file is contained in the DOS Flash directory and is named XXX_MMmm.bin where "XXX" is the abbreviated BIOS family, "MM" is the major version number, and "mm" is the minor version number. F10 ROM based flash can accept the binary file from the root directory of any removable media such as USB, legacy floppy diskette, and CD. The BIOS CD Media file, included in this softpaq, should be used to create a BIOS image CD. When flashing with F10 ROM based flash, the CD media must be El-Torito compatible. The user is prompted when the process is completed. The new BIOS code will not take effect until the PC is rebooted.

View Contents of DOS Flash Folder

So here is what you do...

1. Get a USB flash drive and format it with the FAT32 file system.

2. Click on the blue View Contents of DOS Flash folder link in the instruction page under the F10 Setup BIOS Flashing section.

3.  Copy the file contents of the DOS flash folder to your flash drive.  Just the file contents, not the folder.

4. Restart the PC, Tap the F10 key at the beginning of the HP welcome screen to get access to the BIOS menu.

5. Select the File tab>Flash System Rom command.

6.  Select the USB flash drive.

7.  The PC should now 'see' the file contents on the USB flash drive.

8.  Follow the on screen instructions to update the BIOS.

wont let me view contents of DOS flash folder

I don't get what you mean.

You just click on the blue link after you run the BIOS update file under the F10 BIOS flash method.

The window automatically shows the files.

If you still can't figure it out, I have zipped up and attached below the BIOS flash files you need to copy to your FAT32-formatted USB flash drive.

Download and unzip the folder I attached, open it and copy and paste the file contents of the folder to your flash drive.

Then proceed from there...

hello again, I'm a bit confused is the link posted the update? When I click it, it downloads something and I assumed that was the update, I put it on my USB but when I was in the F10 bootup menu it says my USB was empty

didnt see your second reply, Im good now, thank you

The file I attached above is the BIOS update (DOS Flash.zip).

You need to download and unzip the file, so you can access the BIOS update files within the unzipped folder.

Then copy and paste just the file contents of the unzipped folder to your FAT32 formatted USB flash drive.
