My desktop was built for me back in 2014 and recently was having some issues. So I had some friends take a look and they confirmed my motherboard has bit the dust. I no longer have the contact of the original builder, so I was wondering if anyone could help me determine which motherboard I could upgrade to? Any info to point me in the right direction is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Remember these facts:
The HP 500-164 is a circa 2013 chassis. The RAM was doubled, 500W PSU added to compliment the r7 card.
1) Original OS was WIN 8. Regardless of whether you installed WIN 10, it belongs to that motherboard.
2) You will have procedures to hurtle thru. It belongs to the same motherboard model number.
Swap out to a different motherboard, Hmmmm.
1) Windows will not activate.
2) front header power switch will have to be rewired. Possible standoff mismatches.
3) RAM is not transferable to new board. Wrong specifications.

Just a little clarification. When you say built for you, was a custom case used and the HP MB installed in it? Or is this MB in an actual HP case and if so what is the model number of the HP? If you have a custom case for a home built then depending on the form factor you could choose from a wide variety of motherboards. In other words ATX or possibly Micro ATX if you have a Mini desktop case. And if this was a custom build could you post the specifics of the CPU, RAM, PSU, etc.?

Thank you so much for the quick response! It is an actual HP case. As for the rest of the information, let me check with my friend who diagnosed the problem tomorrow at work. I’m sure I can provide some of the specs. Thanks again!

So what I’m hearing is I’m probably better off cutting my losses and starting over 🙂
Mainly because I don’t have the expertise to necessarily pull off a successful swap.
Thank you very much for taking the time to break down the obstacles and linking potential fixes for me! I truly appreciate it.
