HP Pavilion AMD Phenom II Quad core 8 GB Ram Installed
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My Desktop Has completly stopped working.  It will not boot up.  It dodesnt respond to F1, F3 etc keys.  It doesn't even sound as if the Hard drive is working.  it was purchased in July 2011.   I suspect that the MotherBoard is cooked..  I do see green lights on the board when looking into the side vents.   in addition, when pressing the Power On button, it use to turn Blue when depressed.. It no longer has a color.

I'm now looking into purchasing a New All in One Desktop on HSN   The 1st is an HP 23.8 Touchscreen  AMD A9 8GB, 1 TB HDD  All-in-One but its a Dual Core for $699.00  The 2nd Option is an HP 23.8 Touchscreen Intel Core I3, 8GB Ram, 1TB HDD All-in-One PC ,  However this is a Quad Core.  the price is $849.00

I guess my main question here is the Quad Core much better than the Dual Core .  also is my current one salvageable  Thank you for your cooperation.  Bill

@acadiabill,

I can bear with "the new person".  They are fun.  The system has a ranking, thus the names, (Honor Student aka beginner, and Provost aka Senior Member. It is all based for the level of activity.  I have been here many years.

The two models that you mentioned from HSN are called AIO (All-In-One).  If your not a gamer, then either is suitable.

What you get is a clutter-free unit.  The monitor (flat screen) chassis is thicker to allow the motherboard to be installed. The power supply (PSU) is just like what you would get with a laptop. The keybaord and mouse are wireless, and the computer has  Wi-Fi.  For the individual that wants internet, email and the basics, it's an excellent choice.

As to which is better?  The I3 unit has a faster processor than the AMD A9.   The I3 is better.

@acadiabill,

What is your intention with the AIO models?  Either of those units would be OK for basic computing. Neither is suitable for serious gaming. Neither is upgradeable in the graphics area. It's a laptop style motherboard mounted inside a compact monitor.

Both have laptop power supplies.  Get the point ?

Hi WB2001

Thank You for your suggestion.  I believe your recommendation will be pleasing to my wife. It's her computer that died. She's been leaning towards the Intel unit. for the life of me AIO was staring me in the face and I didn't pick up on it.  Fortunately, we both have HP Laptops and she can still function with her teaching and communicate with her students.  All her teaching syllabus and student type work is backed up.  Best Buy said they were unable to read the hard drive..  She does have some stuff backed up, but I would  venture to say, not so recently.   She prefers to sit at her desk with a bigger monitor than her 15" laptop screen.  I like your Profile sketching.  i didn't see any close images that resembled a (My) 72 year white male with a white beard and greyish brownish hair and balding at the top . Once again thank you for your suggestion.  Have a great holiday.   Bill
