I want to upgrade my 500gb NVMe SSD to a 1TB unit.  I am just wondering what my options are.  I have the opertunity of a free WD Black 1TB drive and just wondering if this would work.  I am ok with the clone/transfer of data but just need to understand what the port supports and what it does not.

This is the new drive - WD_BLACK 1TB SN850 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive with Heatsink - Works with Playstation 5, Gen4 PCIe, M.2 2280, Up to 7,000 MB/s - WDS100T1XHE

what drives does the motherboard support ?  Any help greatly approciated.

Hi:

Below is the link to the product specs for your PC.

You would have to replace the 512 GB NVMe SSD your PC came with because there isn't a second NVMe slot to add a second one.

The WD BLACK 1TB SN850 will work fine, but only at the PCIe Gen 3 speed because that is the PCIe version of your PC's NVMe slot.

So, you will not get anywhere near the 7,000 MBPS speeds.

But if you can get it for free, go for it.

Hello @BigD23

Your WD black will work fine as @Paul_Tikkanen wrote.

Potentially there is one problem but it may not apply to you.

If your 512 SSD has 512 bytes per sector and the SN850 has 4096 bytes per sector there may be a problem using the free WD migration software.  WD uses a version of Acronis True Image and the cloning app has (or had) a problem with different sector size.

You can check your existing sector size using MSINFO

If both are 512 or both 4096 then no problem.  It is also possible the WD software can handle different sector sizes.

There appears to be a WD community and you could ask about the cloning software there.  I noticed the 850 was mentioned a few times and WD tech support responds on the forum occasionally.
