HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Small Form Factor PC

I recently purchased an Orico J-10 NVMe drive to install in my EliteDesk 800 G3 i7 7700, and it's not detected in either the BIOS or Windows. The BIOS has been updated to the latest version, which is P01 Ver. 2.50 07/17/2024, and reset to the factory defaults. The M.2 slot is enabled.

 

It's possible that either the drive or the M.2 slot is faulty, but. I think it's more likely to be a driver issue. I've tried many different drivers on the Windows 10 installation screen, but none seem to work. I'd be grateful for any assistance.

I highly doubt it is a driver issue.

 

Windows does not need any additional drivers to install, and the BIOS does not show the drive as a bootable device for some reason.

 

I don't see any storage controller drivers for the J10 drive on the support site either.

 

ORICO PCIe 3.0 NVMe M.2 SSD

 

I have the 800 G3 DM PC which has the same chipset as the 800 G3 SFF, and I installed a Samsung 980 1 TB NVMe SSD with no problem.

 

I subsequently clean installed W11 on the drive with no problem as well.

 

I seem to recall that the drive didn't show up in the BIOS, but I have been used to reading many posts on this forum regarding that anomaly on several HP desktop and notebook PC's.

 

Have you tried installing Windows on the drive?

I’ve seen the other reports, which is why I thought it was more likely to be a software issue or something in the BIOS settings, rather than a problem with the NVMe drive.

 

I have installed Windows 10 on an HDD, but the NVMe drive still doesn’t show up in Windows, so there’s no way I can install anything on it. Unfortunately, I have no other hardware to test the drive on, as I use Macs.

 

The drive was purchased from Amazon resale, and the packaging was damaged, so it’s possible that it is defective, although there were no signs of any damage on the board itself. I guess I will have to send it back and try a different drive or get a 2.5” SATA one instead.

While looking for a solution, I came across many posts from people with similar issues, so here’s an update in case anyone stumbles across this thread.

 

I tried tweaking the BIOS settings as others had suggested, but that didn’t work for me, so I returned the original drive. I purchased a Kingston NV3 for my PS5 and decided to try that in my EliteDesk. It showed up on the Windows installation screen like any normal hard drive would. I didn’t have to do anything.

 

The Kingston NV3 drive was a bit too expensive for my 6TB server (total build cost under £120), so I bought a 256GB WD SN740 as a boot drive. That was also detected with no issues.

 

I’ve got so used to electrical devices working these days that I’m still questioning whether it was a compatibility issue or the original drive was faulty, but if it was a compatibility issue, installing a new drive shouldn’t be that difficult.
