Omen 880 -050
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have HP Omen 880 -050 desktop. It has existing SSD, NVMe M.2 form with 500 GB. Just bought a Samsung 970 EVO plus SSD as upgrade because it has 1 TB of space instead my current 500 GB. I put the new 970 in an enclosure case so I can clone the data on my existing drive to the new EVO 970. So far the attempt to clone is not working. My pc recognizes the USB enclosre device but not the drive in it. Installed Samsung magician and date migration software. It sees the drives but says none are supported. Can my Omen 880 accept the upgrade to 970EVO plus SSD?

@JD1865,

Please specify the enclosure.  Not all enclosures are compatible.

Hi, Kingwin, KM-U3NGFF-NVE; connects via USB 3.1. Bought at same time as drive at Micro Center yesterday. Enclosure cost 50-60 dollars. Says compatible with Samsung NVMe on the box. Thanks

@JD1865,

There are some different versions of your Samsung 970 EVO NGFF NVMe plus.  What is the exact model number?

Hi, I did get some direct advice from Micro Center Monday. So I was able to initialize the disk and format it. I was not aware of those steps, cause I've never tried to swap out a C: drive; I've just added extrnal drives to my rigs. So my PC is now seeing the drive via the USB connection. The drive is functional in holding files.But the Samsung migration software still doesn't see it. And their magician software doesn't like any of my Samsung SSDs. Anyway I've made some progress. Model: MZ-V7S1T0.

BTW, to install a driver for a new SSD, do you install it onto the new SSD, or onto the C: drive, being the drive that now has the OS?  Same question for firmware. What's the process?

@JD1865,

Can you swap the NVMe SSD's and then boot from USB?

Does it now see both?

Hi, today I bought an adapter to which I can attach the new SSD and then place the adapter card into an open PCIe slot. I have one open. So I just did this install. My pc recognized the newly installed SSD, 970 EVO plus in the PCIe slot. So now I have both SSD M.2s running internally. Fired up the Samsung migration software and it immediately recognized the new SSD (for the first time). Did a file transfer between the two SSDs and it semed pretty fast. For now all seems well. I can probably do the steps to make the new SSD the C: drive. I am not sure how quickly I want to go through that. I think the main thing was to get the EVO attached to the motherboard via PCIe slot. That seems to make it fully functional and able to be seen in the Samsung migration tool. At the moment I am pleased, one step at a time. In my travels I've seen lots of folks employing the adapter method.

@JD1865,

Reading into the specs, the 970 listed as an PCIEx4 device.  Nice to know you found a solution.
