HP Omen 880-101na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

2 questions about

Omen Model : 880-101na :

Question 1 : Can I replace the stock 1 * 8 GB 2400 MHz Ram with 1 * 16 GB 2666 MHz Ram like it says on the Crucial site here : https://uk.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hp---compaq/omen-880-101na#memory which goes against what it says on the HP webiste here : https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c05844408 that the Motherboard Model : 'Tampa 2' that came with my Omen can only support 2400 clock RAM?

Question 2 : Can I upgrade my CPU to ANY LGA-1151 Socket Processor to any other LGA-1151 Socket Processor (after quite some digging I discovered that the i5 - 8400 2.8 GHz Coffee Lake CPU was a 300 series (Coffee Lake) CPU and that they only fit in LGA-1151-2 or LGA-1151-300 or FCLGA1151-2 Sockets (which are all basically the same Socket type THAT ONLY SUPPORT COFFEE LAKE PROCESSORS from what I understand)...

I have this CPU in mind as an upgrade which is also Socket LGA-1151(Coffee Lake) : Intel Core i7-9700KF @ 3.60 GHz

I also found this regarding Compatible CPU's with LGA-1151 and FCLGA-1151: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/search/featurefilter.html?productType=873&1_Filter-Socke... but I don't know if FCLGA-1151 is the same as LGA-1151 : I know that 100 and 200 CPU's ( Skylake & Kaby Lake) are not compatible with a 300 (Coffee Lake) socket and vise versa and I can see that both the i5-8400 that came with my Omen AND the Intel Core i7-9700KF on that list are both compatible with that socket (FCLGA-1151).

EDIT : it looks like I found the answer myself to the CPU upgrade over here : https://community.intel.com/t5/Processors/What-is-the-difference-between-sockets-FCLGA-1151-and-LGA-... yes indeed fclga and lga are the same thing, it's just another name for it and I can upgrade my Tampa 2 Motherboard with ANY Coffee Lake socket LGA-1151 CPU  but...

I don't want to spend £330 on a CPU then extra for Heatsink and cooling (because that CPU doesn't come with any) and a further £70 on RAM only to discover that the CPU won't work in my Motherboard because the Motherboard doesn't support the RAM required for the new CPU, so...

I still need help with the first question about the RAM.

The PC is only 18 months old and I spent £1000 on it which is the most I ever spent on a PC and I can only afford to buy upgrades for it now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I will re-phrase the whole post with 1 simple question :

Does the Motherboard in this Omen support DDR4 2666 MHz Ram?

@Quack_Quack_Go,

HP tests there units, then states the limits.  I would believe their limits.

From what I have been reading over the last couple of days this is not necessarily true so I went ahead and bought 2 * 8 GB 3200 Mhz 288 pin UDIMM RAM for my Omen, it's Thursday today, it's due within 3 working days so it should arrive by Tuesday, I will post again when it arrives to let everyone know the answer to the 1st question and could be a few weeks until I can post the answer to the 2nd question

I also just discovered that the CPU that came with my Omen requires 2666 Mhz https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/126687/intel-core-i5-8400-processor-9m-cache-up... except my Omen came with 1 * 8 GB 2400 RAM so I expect that an upgrade to another processor that also requires 2666 Mhz RAM would not be an issue

okay so the 2 * 8 GB 3200 DDR4 Ram I ordered arrived today, I installed it and booted up and checked ram speed in the task manager and it's running at 2666 Mhz ! so I conclude that the Tampa 2 Motherboard that ships with the Omen 880-xxx models supports 288 pin DDR4 UDIMM Ram up to 2666 Mhz clock speed, that's good! now I can upgrade the CPU to Intel Core i7-9700KF @ 3.60 GHz that I have in mind when I can afford it !
