OMEN 35L Gaming Desktop PC GT16-0000i RCTO Base Model

Hello @Hawks_Eye.  You replied to a post "Add additional NVMe to a PC Gaming OMEN 35L GT16" on  ‎04-15-2025 about adding a new SSD.  In your steps you mentioned:

  • Power on the desktop and enter the BIOS to ensure the SSD is recognized.

Where do you look in the BIOS and what if the SSD isn't recognized?  I installed an Orico NVMe M.2 SSD PCIe 4.0 into the second SSD slot but it is not showing up in Disk Management.

BIOS Behavior Clarification

You're absolutely right, the OMEN BIOS doesn't always show a detailed NVMe configuration section like some custom-built boards. If the SSD isn't listed under System Information > Storage, then the BIOS isn't detecting it at all, which means:

  • It's either not compatible,
  • Not properly seated, or
  • Defective.

Since you've already reseated it multiple times, let's move to the next logical step.

Yes, Testing in an M.2 Enclosure is Valid

Using a USB M.2 NVMe enclosure is a great way to test the SSD. If the drive is recognized when connected via USB:

  • The SSD is functional.
  • The issue is likely with compatibility or BIOS support on the OMEN motherboard.

If the SSD is not recognized even in the enclosure, it may be DOA (Dead on Arrival).

 

Compatibility Consideration

The Orico E7400 is a PCIe Gen 4 x4 SSD, which should be compatible with the OMEN 35L GT16, but:

  • HP systems can sometimes be picky with third-party SSDs, especially lesser-known brands.
  • Some SSDs require firmware initialization or driver support that’s not native to Windows or HP BIOS.

Optional: Try the SSD in the Primary Slot

If you're comfortable doing so, you could temporarily:

  1. Remove the existing 1TB SSD.
  2. Install the Orico SSD in the primary M.2 slot.
  3. Boot into BIOS and check if it’s detected.

This helps rule out whether the second M.2 slot is the issue.

To verify if the SSD is detected at the hardware level:

  1. Restart your PC and press Esc repeatedly during boot to enter the Startup Menu.
  2. Press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  3. Navigate to Storage > Device Configuration or Advanced > NVMe Configuration (depending on BIOS version).
  4. Look for the SSD listed under NVMe or PCIe devices.

If the SSD is not listed, it may indicate a hardware compatibility issue or improper seating.

Reseat the SSD

Sometimes, the SSD may not be fully seated in the M.2 slot:

  1. Power off the PC and unplug it.

Hello and thank you for the reply! 
I tried checking the BIOS, but I do not see anything in the BIOS Setup that has Storage>Device Configuration or Advanced>NVMe Configuration.  When I hit ESC to get into the BIOS Startup Menu I see System Information, System Diagnostics, Boot Menu, BIOS Setup, and System Recovery.  In System Information there is a Storage icon and then when I click on it I only see the main hard drive (1TB M.2 NVMe 2280 SSD M .2 PCIe 4.0 x4)
I also tried reseating the SSD a few times.
The ORICO e7400 2TB is a PCIe 4.0 x4  NVMe M.2 SSD 2280 (https://orico.global/products/orico-e7400?variant=51258161922353)

The SSD does not show up in Disk Management.

I checked to see if there were any updates for the Omen, but there weren't.
Would trying the SSD in a M.2 SSD enclosure count as testing it?  I plan to do that next.

Hello and thank you for your help.  I replaced the Orico SSD with a Crucial P310 1TB SSD and the desktop recognized it.  I then put the Orico SSD in an enclosure and tried to use it in a USB port and the Omen did not see the SSD.  I am going to send it back and just stick with the Crucial 310.

Switching to the Crucial P310 was a smart move, it's a reliable and well-supported SSD, especially for HP systems. Returning the Orico drive makes sense given it wasn’t recognized even in an enclosure.
