My PC is running slow and has done for some time. I need to know what to purchase to get it to run faster please. I have installed all the updates routinely to the operating software and store all I can on an external drive, but its still SOOOOO slow. Many thanks for your advice!

Looking at the specs for that PC does not offer much. The processor (CPU) is fixed - cannot be upgraded. The hard drive is a possible to change to a SATA SSD. And adding some more memory to 8GB might also help.
If it was your perception of a faster speed in times past, then possible those two things can help. A clean install of the latest Windows 10 version might be a help, too. If would definitely do that if replace the hard drive with a SATA SSD.
Other than that not much can be done.
BTW: make a backup of all useful data to external media before doing the hard drive replacement, so you will not lose memories.
If you need the latest version install media for Windows 10, you can make it from this Microsoft download
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
With a working PC, scroll down to the "Using the tool to create installation media"
and then follow the directions. You can make either the DVD or USB. Use this new media to install Windows 10.
When the install asks for the product key, click the "I don't have a product key" option to continue,
then the install will continue. It will be activated once it connects to the internet, as it uses a digital key.

Thanks so much for your advice - it seems I am a bit stuck!
Would it be expensive to do the hard drive change and to buy more memory?? I am wondering if that is just throwing good money after bad, for not that much improvement??
If so I would welcome your further advice and what to buy new instead? I have a lovely big monitor and keyboard to keep and compliment a new tower??

Well that is a choice. The support page indicates that PC design is almost 4 years old. Along with the specs not being too aggressive, it might be better to spend any extra money and a higher spec newer PC. Since the CPU cannot be upgraded, there are few other choices.
The SSD @ $55.00US
8GB memory about $55.00US also.
To find out for sure, stop by Crucial.com and click on the Crucial scanner.

This will allow them to offer guaranteed upgrades on the SSD and memory cards for that model - as long as you buy from them. This will give a very good idea on what is being considered. Be aware that those prices do not include installation, so if you are not handy in these activities, then a PC service tech or a skilled friend will be needed. All those things needed to be factored into the price VS a new PC that has those advanced items built into the new device.
IMHO, I would be looking for a new, more adequate device.
