Pavilion Desktop 790-0050t
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just got a custom build Pavilion Desktop 790-0050t from hp.com and I noticed that the 400w power supply fan was not spinning.  I restarted the unit and noticed that the PSU fan does spin immediately on start-up but after a couple of seconds it stops.  I have yet to see the fan spin while it is in use but I haven't pushed it hard yet.  I have read that there are PSUs where the fan only runs when required based on load or temp.  I called HP tech support to ask if this power supply was operating as it should or should the fan be spinning all the time.  I was told the power supply was defective since the fan was not spinning all the time.  Since I am within the 30 day return window and since HP tech support was telling me it was defective I had no choice but to return this unit and request that a replacement unit is shipped.  But I have a feeling that there is a chance the PSU was operating correctly and the replacement unit will act the same.

Has anyone else seen the same issue?  The label on the PSU shows it as HP Part # 942332-001 and Model# PA-3401-1 but I can not find any info online about this model.

Greetings,

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

You are probably correct.

I can't attest to the characteristics of this specific PSU.

But many new power supplies do have a passive mode.

The fan only spins at a  specific temperature threshold.

I got my replacement machine and as I suspected, the power supply (same model as previously posted) performs exactly the same way.  So did HP send me two custom built machines with faulty power supplies OR does HP technical support have no technical knowledge of their products?

So what do I do?  Accept HP tech support at their diagnosis that the power supply is faulty and send it back within my 30 day return window and give up on buying from HP or do I accept that the power supply is working correctly and risk failure down the road?

Hi Park_KS,

Best guess, only a guess because HP does not provide power supply details, is the power supply has a passive mode.

Stress the system and check the power supply fan.

All of my PC builds use Corsair, EVGA, or Seasonic power supplies that have a passive fan mode.

Regards
