HP ENVY Phoenix Desktop - 860-180st CTO
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My computer is only five years old, but the processor (Intel Core i7-6700K (Skylake) (95 W) 4.0 GHz) is not supported by Windows 11. Is there another Intel processor that is compatible with my motherboard that supports Windows 11?

Thanks,

Tom Anderson

hi

  • 3 TB 7200 rpm SATA 6G
  • 256 GB SATA Solid State Drive ?
  • 512 GB SATA Solid State Drive
  • 1 TB 7200 rpm SATA 6G RAID 0 (2 x 500 GB HDD)

Warning

Windows 11 on devices that don't meet minimum system requirements
We risk having serious problems, probably updates, security problems, we do not really know what else

If the installation goes well for some, for others it can be complicated
Hp also might not provide any update:

HP PCs – Support for Windows 11 | HP® Customer Support

Think carefully, before taking the risk, see the experiences of other users, see if it can be interesting, or if you can wait to have a new computer later, 100% compatible!
Windows 10 remains one of the best systems, and can be used for quite a while.

To better understand, I tried the installation
The computer being "compatible", and offered in update with windows update
Be careful, because I haven't seen anyone mentioned this
I have a 256gb drive, there was quite a bit of space left, but during the upgrade the drive turned red.
Although I install many games on my Data player!
So I was forced to sacrifice some programs to avoid problems
information which seems to me to be quite important, take care of the available space (I had at least half of it free, if not more)!

It is a call from Microsoft which is surprise for all including hardware vendors. If you wish, you can

Hi, @Tombikes1

There aren't any supported W11 processors you can install.

HP ENVY Phoenix 860-180st CTO Desktop PC product specifications and configurable options | HP® Custo...

I found a new and relatively easy way to do an in-place upgrade to W11 on most unsupported PC's that have a UEFI BIOS like yours...

I would make a system image of your current W10 installation prior to updating to W11, so you can easily reinstall W10 in the future.  I used the free Macrium Reflect software to do that, under the Backup at Home section.

Along with the system image, make sure you create the bootable DVD or USB rescue drive you boot from to access the system image stored on your portable hard drive.

Macrium Software | Reflect Free Edition

First make this registry change...

Then download the Windows 11 ISO file (3rd option), not the W11 installation assistant.

Download Windows 11 (microsoft.com)

Use Rufus and make a bootable USB installer with the ISO file you downloaded.

There is a new option to create an installer that is supposed to bypass the W11 hardware checks.

After you make the installer, open the file contents, and double click on the setup application and see if that works.

Here is the link to the Rufus download.  You want the version 3.17 portable.

Here is a screenshot for how you should let Rufus set up the ISO file...
