Did we ever find out if 905605-001 works or if there are pictures of this part number. I am in the sane situation and can't find anyone that has the following in stock anywhere. IS this the sd3 reader?
**Longer cord SD 4 which appears to be for HP 400 G2, 405 G2, 490 G2, 700G1 (and probably you):
AS P/N: 718266-002
SP P/N: 759030-001
Not in stock
**Shorter cord SD 4 which could work fine with a USB3 extension cable presuming it is too short for your box:
AS P/N: 718266-001
SP P/N: 742719-001
Not in stock
Super annoyoing how something as simple as an SD card reader should work and just be easily able to be purchased. I hate having extra "stuff" hanging off the computer and would prefer something that is in it and since the slot is blank I want the actual oem solution for it....

Found this: HP USB 2.0 SD CARD READER 782646-001
https://www.ebay.com/itm/222535403868
I bought it because I can't find the SD4 card reader anywhere in stock. I messaged the seller and asked about the mounting bracket...etc. This is the entire kit. So it comes with the usb2.0 adaptor as well which is nice. Bracket looks to be on point.
Happy that I will have a sd card reader finally. I'm blown away with how difficult such a simple thing was... way to go HP... Had to get it from Australia..
See attched picture of what item is.

NewShockerGuy..... for your particular workstation I'm sure you know there are 3 versions... the mini, the small form factor, and the microtower. The last two have that small slot on their faceplates for the small card reader that is so handy to have, but which you can only get at the time you order the workstation built for you, not as an option part later. What a headache.
This is nothing new.... HP has some options available only at the time of ordering, and other options that you can get after the fact.
If you are lucky you have the microtower version because it has enough space in it to have a 5.25" form factor bay. Then you can put in a nice HP 5.25 to 3.5" bay adapter. And inside that you can put an up to date HP 3.5" form factor card reader. I have the part numbers for the nice HP bay converter and the USB3 HP 3.5" card reader with the USB3 to USB2 HP adapter shown earlier in this thread. Let me know if you need that info...... if you have the SFF box you're looking out of luck because it does not have a 3.5" or 5.25" bay.

Yep, have the micro tower.
The problem with going with the 3.5" adapters is that it's going to leave a hole all the way around where the card reader is, no? One thing I noticed which was annoying is that when I put in a 5.25 optical drive in the bay it say recessed behind the bezel which made it look really stupid. I'll snap a picture later. So I ended up paying the $90 for the slim optical drive which is insane to me.. but at least it's flush.
Feel free to post the info, I'd greatly appreciate it. The SD card reader I have now already has the usb3 to usb2 converter which is nice, but it's just so annoying how one can't source a freaking SD card reader for the front of the bezel which ALREADY has the slot/blocking plate there. I'm not sure why this just isn't a standard feature. They put it on all their laptops why not add the $7 into the price of the machine and just include it. Seems so silly to me.
Thanks much!

I'm almost ready to throw this HP prodesk 600 g3 away honestly. I have never in my life been so frustrated on pc/IT equipment that just should work and it clearly doesn't.
This is what I bought:https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-22-in-1-Media-Card-Reader-3-5-Includes-5-bracket-AR941AT-MCR22IN1-5181/3...
The HP card reader I bought does NOT work at all with this. It has a normal 9 pin usb header. The header on the MOBO is 11 pins. After a lot of research it was said that the two most end pins are more likely just ground and that a normal 9 pin usb header would plug in be fine. Apparently not, because the HP 21-card reader does not recogonize or get power from the board.
So now I am wondering **bleep** is going on?? Does anyone have an idea on a card reader that would fit the (pictured) mother board headers. If HP stuff isn't going to work with HP stuff, then why do they not just sell their proprietary SD card reader made for this tower?? I'm steaming here.
Looking for a solution. Note it has to be internal, I can't have external stuff about.

Hang in there.... . The motherboard header you show is a 2 x 6 with one blank. The USB plug from the reader is a 2 x 5 with one epoxy filled hole that will correspond to the blank on the header (the missing pin). Don't use those two spare pins at the far right end of the motherboard header. Will that plug then work for you?
Second, I have a bunch of spare HP SD card readers that are the USB3 type that have the USB3 blue "motherboard connector" type of plug end which can plug straight into a USB3 motherboard header if you have one available on your motherboard. USB3 = 3.1. It will be blue also, and the motherboard on my earlier post in this thread had both the USB2 SD card pin header and one of those straight-to-USB3 blue headers present.....go take a look. My spare SD card readers also have the single-row USB3 to USB2 adapter. I got all those spares because I only wanted the HP 5.25 to 3.5 adapters and that was the best buy. You're welcome to one of those free if you want, with the cable adapter.
Note the little triangle on the MB which is pin 1. Then the 2? So that is the pin order.... 12, 34, 56, 78, 9 is your blank, 11-12 you'll leave exposed. Many motherboard USB2 headers are 2 x 5 with pin 9 the blank and one side of the connector has 5 open holes and the other has 4.

Here is a pic of one of the single-row USB3 to USB2 adapters. Now that you know the order of the pins you can see that you could slip that onto pins 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or even on pins 1, 3, 5, 7, and the extra black ground wire would do nothing sitting over the area where the blank (missing) pin is. Either would work. I'd put it over the side with 5 true pins shown.
The red wire for that adapter would go on either pin 1 or pin 2.... If you had a spare USB3 blue motherboard header I'd use that for the extra speed value, by the way.

Yep, plugged it in and it's not recoginized at all. See pictures of the connections I have.
also tried the HP card reader that came with the usb adapter. Also doesn't get recogonized. Checked the BIOS and that port for the card reader is checked along with all other front ports/usb/m.2, etc..
I double checked the SD reader and it's recognized on my OLD 10+ year old HP usb 2.0 headers. Put a card in it and it read just fine. This prodesk though, nothing.

SUPER Strange....
I did as you said. I moved the pins down one so that the top row was on the bottom. I could use the USB port on the card reader but not the card reader. Switched it around and then the card reader works. Quite odd it doesn't show up at all in device manger. So I am assuming that the top row of USB header pins is not functional... which is lame. I am going to test the other one with the bottom pins to see what happens. I should take a mulitmeter to the top row of pins and see if any voltage is coming through. So I can either have the single usb port work or get the card reader working..lol
I guess it's not a total loss now but wow, I'm blown away how something on a scale of 1-10 being a 1, how this has been nothing but a headache.
