I have a HP Simple Save hard drive and I forgot my password to access it. Is there a way to get my password?

Commentary

The software that was used with these devices was resident on the drive itself --

Even when the devices were supported (many years ago), there was no easy way to reconfigure were the software lost, non-functional, corrupted, or inaccessible.

Worse, the backup method encrypted the data as it was backed up to the drive.

Without access to the software, you cannot access or recover the data backed up on the hard drive.

Dragon Opinion

I had three of these units "back in the day".  I did have access to the software and looked at it enough to understand how the backups worked.  I never used the onboard software -- instead I reformatted the drives to be used with general copy / transfer backup methods.

It all likely seemed like a good idea at the time -- the SimpleSave methodology proved shortsighted as people lost access to the software for various reasons and (therefore) lost access to the data on the drives.  The drives themselves tended to last about three to five years or a bit longer.  The drive housing was special, the internal power supply units were "just OK", and even the power cable was a special piece of hardware.

You try asking for help from a forensic data specialist -- data retrieval services might be expensive.

Depending on the data, it might be worth a check.
