HP Pavilion Desktop - 570-p014
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I’m having an issue trying to boot from an ssd. I installed a Samsung 870 evo 1tb and I cloned my hard drive. I updated the bios before I installed the ssd. The pc will not boot while it’s installed in the pc. The computer turns on and the HP logo appears and the system completely freezes. I can’t enter the bios or anything. When I remove the drive from the case and I install it into my external drive. I can then boot from the ssd. I’m lost on this issue.

The settings in the bios are set correctly also.

Hi

There may be no solution or you'll have to try a different SATA SSD manufacturer. Check this Link for more information.

A HP 2.5 inch SATA drive may work. The 960 GB version is $50.00.

Okay. Thank you. I did notice there is an nvme slot on the motherboard. Has anyone had success at booting from an nvme?

"I updated the bios before I installed the ssd. "
Did you verify the PC's operation after you updated the BIOS ROM file?

Is the original disk still installed when you connect the SSD and try to boot to it?

Try disconnecting the original HD and then connecting and  booting from the EVO 870 SSD.

Yes, I did all that. I can boot from the original HD fine. Just not from an ssd. I’m gonna go purchase a cheap nvme and test it since there is m.2 slot available

That does not answer the question that I asked you.

Did you verify that the the clone as being the same volume type as the original?

If the original was EFI and you created an MBR volume, what has happened makes sense. Its an apples and oranges thing.
The BIOS reacts to volume types differently, depending on how it was set up.

Everyone does things differently, but creating a clean installation on the SSD with RUFUS may have been a better idea.

You should give the article at the link below a read. It discusses, in detail,  the very situation you find yourself in.

I’ll wipe the drive and plug it back in to see if it freezes. From the links with the 1st reply, this is a common issue with this model HP. The reason for cloning the drive, is because the pc belongs to my pastor and he wants to retain everything he has on the pc.

But the ssd will boot while it’s plugged in through usb from my external drive

Have  you checked the volume type of the original Hard Disk?

What is the setting in BIOS for the volume type?

The issue is common with all makes of PC  and Windows OS when cloning goes wrong.

What product did you use for cloning?

The one that Samsung provides is one I never had success with.
I used it in the past  and ended up in the same situation as yourself.

I used clonezilla to clone the drive. In the bios I have the device configuration set for AHCI. I’m not home right now to check anymore settings.

HP Recommended

The volume type will be either MBR(Legacy) or UEFI.

When a PC is powered on, the BIOS looks for the specific type  and disk sector information, before allowing a disk to boot to an OS.

AHCI (advanced host controller interface) is not the same as a Volume type. AHCI has to do with a sata controller settings allowing NCQ and hot-plugging.
