Hi @lslewis_ca,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue where pressing the colon (:) or semi-colon (;) keys on your HP KU-9963 keyboard produces no character, but works on an online keyboard, could be due to several reasons, including hardware issues, software settings, or keyboard layout problems. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
Troubleshooting Steps
Check Keyboard Layout:
- Ensure that your keyboard layout is set correctly. Sometimes, an incorrect layout can cause certain keys to not function as expected.
- Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language.
- Click on your preferred language and select Options.
- Under Keyboards, make sure the correct keyboard layout (e.g., US QWERTY) is selected.
Test Keyboard on Another Computer:
- Plug your HP KU-9963 keyboard into another computer to see if the issue persists. If the keys work on another computer, the problem is likely with your original computer's settings or drivers.
Update or Reinstall Keyboard Driver:
- Open Device Manager by pressing Win + X and selecting Device Manager.
- Expand the Keyboards section, right-click on your keyboard, and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software. If no updates are found, try uninstalling the driver and restarting your computer to let Windows reinstall it.
Check for Software Interference:
- Some software or background processes can interfere with keyboard input. Try restarting your computer in Safe Mode to see if the issue persists.
- To enter Safe Mode, press Win + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter. Go to the Boot tab, check Safe boot, and select Minimal. Restart your computer.
Run Keyboard Troubleshooter:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Find and run the Keyboard troubleshooter. This can automatically detect and fix common keyboard-related issues.
Check for Sticky or Debris:
- Sometimes, physical debris or a sticky key can cause keys to malfunction. Carefully inspect and clean the keyboard.
- Use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust or debris from under the keys.
Check Keyboard Settings in BIOS/UEFI:
- Restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, F10, Del, or Esc during startup).
- Check if there are any keyboard-related settings that might be causing the issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
