HP Envy All in One 32 a1785ng
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Issue:

Putting HP Envy All in One 32 a1785ng in Sleep mode does not turn off the fan.

GIVEN I select >Sleep<,
WHEN the device goes to sleep,
THEN the fan KEEPS working. It never stops.

Notes:
I believe the fans worked perfectly fine within one of the previous versions of BIOS (probably within F.20 Rev.A) and this is now broken in F.22 Rev.A (the latest version of BIOS)

This is similar to: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/The-option-in-the-BIOS-quot-Fa... but within BIOS settings there is no setting that allows changing the behaviour of the fan.

EDIT:  after further investigation, I can say that the device works properly when it's in hibernation mode (the fan stops).

Only sleep mode is affected by the issue.

It's been several months and HP didn't release any upgrades of firmware for a while.

Here are other issues affecting HP ENVY 32 and all are related to BIOS/firmware:

@jed84 -- download, install, and run the free SPECCY software. It will show the temperature of the motherboard, the processor, and maybe the disk-drive.  Record the values, and "sleep" the computer, for 15 to 30 minutes. Wake the computer, and rerun SPECCY, as soon as possible. What are the temperatures before and after the hibernation?

Note that "sleep" puts the computer into a low-power mode, while "hibernate" writes the contents of RAM to the disk-drive. So, waking from "sleep" is quite quick, but reloading RAM from the disk-drive depends on the speed of the disk-drive, i.e., it takes longer, and the CPU works harder.

Hi @Itsmyname,

After further investigation, I can say that the fan works properly and it does *STOP* when the device is in hibernation.
Only sleep mode is affected by the issue.

The temperature before putting the device in sleep mode is 57-62 degrees.
The temperature after waking the device from sleep (after 20 minutes) is 46-48 degrees.

There is no difference in the temperature when it comes to hibernation (57-62 degrees before and after).

The following video shows how the device is being put in sleep mode where the fan does never stop working:

@jed84 -- before you "sleep" the computer, it is warm. As it enters "sleep", does the motherboard deliberately keep the fan going, until the computer becomes cooler, and then stop the fan?

There is a difference between "sleep" (entering low-power-consumption mode, but allowing "instant-on" to end the sleep) and "hibernate" -- make a complete "check-point" of the computer, so that the next time you boot Windows, it will use that check-point to "restore" Windows, rather than booting a fresh copy of Windows.
