I have recently experienced unusual disconnection between my multi monitors and thunderbolt 4 dock.

All devices are disconnected for a moment.

Thus, I updated my G6 thunderbolt 4 dock, check residual electricity.

Even though BIOS is updated in my laptop, moreover, the symptom is still.

Why is that happening? and How can I solve the problem?

Hi @JW_LEE

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The intermittent disconnection of your HP Thunderbolt 4 Ultra 180W G6 Dock is likely caused by power delivery instability, firmware misalignment, or cable signal degradation.

You’ve already taken excellent steps by updating the dock and BIOS, and checking for residual charge. Here’s what to try next:

1. Update Thunderbolt and USB drivers manually

Even if Windows Update shows everything is current, manual installation ensures compatibility:

2. Use HP Dock Firmware Utility to reflash dock firmware

This tool ensures the dock’s embedded controller is properly aligned with your laptop’s BIOS:

  • Disconnect all peripherals from the dock except power and the host laptop
  • Run the utility and follow on-screen instructions
  • After flashing, shut down the laptop and dock completely
  • Wait 30 seconds, then reconnect and power on

3. Test with a different Thunderbolt 4 cable

Signal degradation or shielding issues can cause momentary drops:

  • Use a certified Thunderbolt 4 cable rated for 40 Gbps
  • Avoid cables longer than 0.8 meters during testing
  • Connect directly to the laptop’s Thunderbolt 4 port (not USB-C or hub)

4. Disable USB selective suspend

This prevents Windows from powering down dock ports during idle:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings
  • Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting
  • Set to Disabled for both battery and plugged in
  • Apply and restart

5. Run HP UEFI diagnostics for dock and port integrity

  • Power off the laptop
  • Press Power + Esc, then tap F2 to enter diagnostics
  • Run:
    • System Board Test
    • USB Port Test
    • Thunderbolt Controller Test (if listed)

Let me know how the dock behaves after these steps. You’ve done everything right by staying proactive and methodical, and I’ll be here to guide you further if needed.

I have the same problem too with ZBook G1A ultra. Seems to be an issue between this laptop and the dock that needs a firmware fix. I'm experiencing multiple disconnects a day.
