Microsoft Windows 11

I have an older HP Envy, Desktop - TE01-0034 that I'd like to rebuild.

OS - Windows 11 Home.

Processor - Intel® Core™ i7-8700 (to maybe Intel Core i7-14000?)

Graphics Card - Intel® UHD Graphics 630 w/16 MB RAM.

MB -  L56019-601 WIN

PSU 180W

I'd like to upgrade the MB, PSU, Processor, and Graphics Card. I'm doing this for a grandson who wants to learn how to rebuild a computer.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Steve

@Counslr,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Your grandson's HP Envy TE01-0034 as fitted with the Rother motherboard (SSID: 8653), is compatible with 8th and 9th gen Intel Core processors only.

A good processor upgrade would be an i7-9700 or i7-9700F, which you can purchase starting at $100 via a trusted eBay Seller, such as this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/175692537942?_skw=i7-9700f&itmmeta=01JM6K46JJ3WNG0XX80QNR6P1F&hash=item28e8....

Mind you, the "F" processors lack internal graphics (iGPU), and will need a graphics card.

Btw, this desktop could be fitted with the more powerful 8th or 9th gen "K" processor versions, such as the i7-9700K or i7-9700KF, but these processors have a higher TDP (95-watt vs. 65-watt) and thus run hotter.  That shouldn't be an issue if you were to improve the airflow inside the case such as by adding a cooling fan -but that may not be your cup of tea.

You'll need to upgrade the power supply.  There is a compatible 400-watt power supply with p/n: 942332-001 or a 500-watt power supply with p/n: L05757-800.  These power supplies are also readily available online, such as via trusted eBay Sellers as I tagged.

With the 400-watt power supply, you can power a smaller-sized (dual fan) RTX 4060, such as this Amazon purchase option: https://www.amazon.com/PNY-GeForce-Graphics-DisplayPort-Supports/dp/B0CQ8M6BGH/ref=sr_1_3?crid=H86OS....

Upgrade your RAM to 2x16GB, such as this affordable/quality dual rank (2Rx8) RAM kit: https://www.amazon.com/Timetec-2600MHz-PC4-20800-Unbuffered-Non-ECC/dp/B07CQ8FJXB/ref=sr_1_5?crid=15....

Last but not least, make sure that your primary (boot) drive is an M.2 NVMe SSD, such as this affordable/quality Amazon purchase option: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PCIe-NAND-NVMe-3500MB/dp/B0B25LZGGW/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3C6LNROF5OE6Z&dib....

Good afternoon NonSequitur777,

I completed the rebuild with the parts you suggested. After playing games for about an hour,  the computer starts making a roaring sound like it wants to take off.  When he quits for about 30 to 45 minutes, the sound stops, then it starts again after 45 minutes to an hour of gameplay.

I think either the CPU needs a better heat sink/CPU fan or the computer needs a new fan. Do you have suggestions for either or even both?  I decided to rebuild all three of the HP Envys and will be upgrading the fans anyway.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

@Counslr,

Just to make sure, please list all of the upgrade components.  What is the wattage of the power supply?

If you upgraded the processor, what thermal paste did you use, and how confident were you when you applied the thermal paste?

Kind Regards,
