I've had my HP Pavilion Gaming TG01-1470nd  for 4 years and I've been happy with it. However, it's starting to show its age with some of my more recent steam acquisitions . It seems a shame to just dump it and buy a new one so I've been considering upgrading the GPU/PSU. I had a nice chat with OpenAI which suggested it was feasible but I'd like to get some human opinions before I pull the trigger and buy the components. CPU-Z reports that this is what I have at the moment:

Motherboard HP 8767 A (SMVB)

Intel Core i7 i7-10700 CPU @ 2.90GHz Comet Lake

NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super

PSU L76557-003 Max 400w (my observation)

ChatGPT made these upgrade suggestions:

GPU

EVGA GeForce RTX 3060 XC Gaming, 12GB GDDR6

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 3060 Ti MINI OC Edition, 8GB GDDR6

ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 3070 Twin Edge OC, 8GB GDDR6

PSU

Corsair SF Series SF600 – 600 Watt 80 Plus Gold SFX

SilverStone Technology SX600-G – 600 Watt 80 Plus Gold SFX

Seasonic Focus SGX-650 – 650 Watt 80 Plus Gold SFX

The current 2060 takes up just under 20cm including the connector and I could go with a card of up to 22cm with a couple of centimetres to spare.

My main concern is whether those PSUs will align correctly in the case and whether I can connect one to the mainboard without any problems. I've read this post https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Upgrading-HP-Pavilion-Gaming-De...  but there seems to be an issue with his motherboard (Erica3?) and I'm uncertain whether it applies to me.

I'd appreciate your advice. What do the humans think?

Edit: I came across this post https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Gaming-Desktops/RT3060-12-GB-for-400W-HP-pavilion-Gaming-tg01/m-p/9018... which suggests my existing PSU will handle an RTX 3060. What if I go for a 3070?  I could put a one in and see if it works but if it doesn't then I guess the question about the PSU is still valid?

@StuartScott,

Welcome to our HP community forum!

You don't necessarily need to upgrade your power supply.  You can upgrade your graphics card with one of the smaller-sized (two fan) RTX 4060 models powered by a single 8-pin PCIe power cable such as this one, which your 400-watt power supply is equipped with.

An RTX 4060 provides a significant graphics upgrade compared with an RTX 2060 Super.

If this graphics card upgrade isn't good enough for you, yes, then you'll have to upgrade your power supply with a 500-watt unit with p/n: L05757-800.  With this power supply, I would recommend one of the smaller-sized (two fan) RTX 4060 Ti models, such as this one.  The graphics performance boost compared with an RTX 2060 Super would be very nice indeed.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and for the advice. It's nice to learn that I could even go for a 4060 - which I think will do nicely. The card you suggested would, at 22.7 cm, just fit but I'm also looking at MSI GeForce RTX 4060 VENTUS 2X BLACK 8G which comes in under 20cm.

Thanks again.

@StuartScott,

You are most welcome.

Btw, the Asus RTX 4060 model I referenced is 20.2 cm long, it is the RTX 4060 Ti that is 22.7 cm.
