HP Z240
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently changed out my Z240 with a i5-6500 to i7-7700. Everything work fine but now BIOS only see 2 ram stick. I have 4x16 PC4-2133P in it for a total of 64GB. I have try to put my i5 back in and it see 64gb again. This only happen with the i7, I also borrowed a i7-7700K too see if I have a bad i7 and the same problem occured.(only see 32GB with the kaby lake i7.) Also updated bios to 1.74. I am stump on why this is happening. Maybe there is BIOS setting somewhere for me to enable the 2 stick?

Good news guys I figured it out. It was the Intel Management Engine firmware that needed to be update to get 64GB. I updated to 11.8 and everything is good now. I dont think HP update all their document, the latest quickest from september 2018 show that z240 support kaby lake processor.

@roseberry , welcome to the forum.

Here is the Maintenance and Service Guide for the computer.  In Chapter 1, Workstation components, Page 7, it states as follows:  Intel Series C236 chipset: ● Support for the Intel® Xeon® Processor E3 v5 Family, sixth-generation Intel Core™ processors up to 95 W, or Intel Pentium® processors.  It doesn't mention seventh-generation processors, such as, the i7-7700.  Therefore, I believe this is your problem.  This is why when you install the original processor it is fine.

Greetings,

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

That is unusual. Kaby Lake processors are supported on LGA 1151 motherboards.

Are you using a memory kit with identical modules? Do the two memory modules not recognized when running the 7700 or 7700k with four sticks installed work when you only install the two unrecognized memory modules?

The only things I could think of is to reset the BIOS to defaults or pull the CR2032 motherboard battery, let the PC sit for about 20 minutes, and reinstall the battery to reset CMOS.

Hi Old_geekster,

That is strange where the 7700 works when installed in the motherboard but memory capacity is diminished.

Hello, that is strange, according to this z240 spec page it does support i7-7700 and the K version too. I was also curious about the config so I looked around on google and there are people with 64GB i7-7700 z240. I just don't know why my Z240 doesn't do it. Is there different version of Z240 like the Z820 v1 and v2?

The 4 memory stick came with the system, I have try to move them around and switching them but as soon as I add the 3rd stick it disappear. Only 2 slot get recongize. I borrowed a e3-1245v5 from a friend today and that show up as 64GB. So this appeared to be just the Kaby Lake i7s problem only, unfortunatly I don't have a lower end Kaby Lake to test out.

@roseberry,

We are seeing a whole lotta different specifications on the workstation.  Here is what it shows in the Product Specifications in the HP Support page:

Again, no mention of the seventh-generation processors!

@roseberry,

The problem may be the fact that HP has their motherboards made to their specifications.  Therefore, they are not always the same as the retail versions of the same board.  They do this so they can use the same board in several different models with different and varying configurations.

@hardwarelover24,

Please see the Maintenance and Service Guide in my first post.  It has all of the specs we have been using.
