Upgrading Omen 870-119

Hey, hopefully I can get a good answer from someone certified at HP.

I recently purchased a omen 870-119 nad have also recently last 2 weeks got into VR I bought my self a Oculus Rift from the same location anyways the GPU inside "GTX 970 2gb" isn't the best GPU to be used with VR will it be possible for me to throw in a GTX 1060 4gb card into this PC or will It light on fire because the PSU is only 500w?

@808CULT, welcome to the forum.

If the card will fit into the space provided and will operate properly with 500W, you will not have any problems.  The power supply unit (PSU) will only supply the amount of power to operate the computer.  If the PSU does not have enough power the card simply won't work.  I normally recommend that the PSU has at least 100W more than the card requires for peak usage.

Do you have a fire extinguisher handy?

A 500 watt power supply should suffice as long as it has the required supplemental PCIe power connections to the graphics card you purchase.

A GTX 1060 card will work and can keep up with a GTX 980. I would go for the 6 GB GDDR5  version.

The best bang for the buck is a GTX 1070.

You would have to verify the power supply meets the minimum wattage requirements (including supplemental connectors) of the graphics card you will purchase.

Before you install the new graphics card:

You will have to verify the card will fit in your PC's chassis.

You will have to enter the UEFI BIOS to disable Secure boot and enable Legacy boot.

You will have to remove current graphics drivers.

Here is a good wattage calculator provided by Cooler Master:

It will give you a good idea of how much wattage you are using.
