OMEN by HP 45L Gaming Desktop PC GT22-0000a (4E977AV)

Hi

I wanted to expand my hard drive storage with a high quality SSD M.2 from WD. The model is called WD_Black SN850X. Installing and removing the graphics card worked without a hitch and I replaced the SSD space that was occupied by a Samsung 980 Pro.

The new SN850X shows up in Windows Explorer as a D-drive with no capacity size, but the usual context menu item "Format" is not available for selection. I cannot format the SSD.

Please help. Many thanks in advance.

Greetings, Marcel

Addendum:

Could it perhaps be that the board does not recognize the 4TB SSD?
The PC is pretty much a year old.

Hi @ryma52,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your OMEN by HP 45L Gaming Desktop PC is not displaying the WD_BLACK SN850X SSD as a 4TB drive, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

Check Physical Connections:

  • Ensure that the WD_BLACK SN850X SSD is properly connected to the motherboard. Check the SATA or NVMe connection, as well as the power connection.

BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Access your computer's BIOS or UEFI settings during boot-up (usually by pressing a specific key like F2, F10, or Delete).
  • Check if the SSD is recognized in the BIOS/UEFI. If it's not listed there, it might not be properly connected or there could be a hardware issue.
  • If it is recognized in the BIOS/UEFI, make sure the drive is set to AHCI mode or NVMe mode (depending on the drive type) and not in a RAID configuration, unless you specifically intend to use RAID.

Device Manager (for Windows):

  • If your PC is running Windows, you can check the Device Manager to see if the SSD is recognized. Right-click the Start button, select "Device Manager," and look under "Disk Drives."

Disk Management (for Windows):

  • Open the Disk Management tool in Windows to see if the drive is recognized but not assigned a drive letter. To do this, right-click on "This PC" or "My Computer" and select "Manage." Then go to "Disk Management" under "Storage."

Partitioning and Formatting:

  • If the drive is recognized but not showing as a 4TB drive, it might not be properly partitioned or formatted. You can use the Disk Management tool in Windows or a partitioning tool to create a partition and format the drive.

Firmware/Driver Updates:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates for the SSD or driver updates for your motherboard. Sometimes, updating firmware or drivers can resolve compatibility issues.

Drive Health and Diagnostic Tools:

  • Use diagnostic tools provided by the SSD manufacturer or third-party utilities to check the health and status of the SSD. This can help identify if there are any hardware issues.

Compatibility Issues:

  • Ensure that the SSD is compatible with your motherboard and operating system. Some older systems may not fully support newer SSDs, and firmware updates may be required for compatibility.

If you have tried these steps and still can't get your WD_BLACK SN850X SSD to display as a 4TB drive, it's possible that there may be a hardware issue with the drive, the motherboard, or another component.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4

Thank you very much for this comprehensive posting, which I appreciate for future issues.

However, my issue was resolved a few days ago. I returned the SSD and purchased and installed a Kingston SSD. Everything is running flawlessly. Have a nice day.

Greetings, Ryma
